My Musical Instruments

"If you love music, man, you can play music. All it takes is love, and, baby, love is power."
~Michael Nesmith

Music is very much a key factor in my life. Not only to I listen to it and write it, but I also play it...with many instruments.
Here is a list and a brief description of all of the instruments I play:

The Cello
Ok, this is my strongest talent out of all of the instruments that I play. I have played it since 1996 and have loved it!! All of my orchestra teachers have rocked and have motivated me to continue on with it over the past eight years. I own my own cello, whom I've named Bucky, and even though I don't think I'll continue to play my cello as a career, I'll definitely keep Bucky to pass down to my kids.

The Violin
I am nowhere near perfect on this. I just started to randomly play other people's violins during my study halls last year and have actually gotten semi-good at it. I love it to death and want to buy a violin of my own to dink around on. I love it.

The Native American Flute
My Speech teacher last year just randomly walked into my Keyboarding class one day and gave me a sheet of paper saying that she'd gladly give me private lessons for it and I said yeah. It was a very odd experience in the way that, you aren't supposed to play it with your mind...you play it with your soul. There are only five notes (six if you are advanced) that you can really play so there are basically no structured songs that you read sheet music for. You just play whatever sounds right. There are also different breathing techniques you work in and you almost find yourself meditating while you're playing. I learned a lot of Native American history/folklore along with playing this and met an interesting couple who took their lessons with me and quickly became aunt/uncle-like figures to me. I absolutely love my flute, and want to thank Mrs. Olson for getting me started.

The Digeridoo
I went to Australia in the summer of '02 and I have been fascinated by this instrument ever since. While I was there, we spent a day watching Aborigines tell stories through playing the didgeridoo and dance. We learned a lot from them while we were at their reserve and so I bought a digeridoo, and like my flute, it is hand made. I love it dearly.

The Piano
Ok, so I can't do two different thing with my hands, but I have an excellent ear and can figure out songs like that on the piano. Sometimes it's just fun to dink around.

My Voice
So I'm not in choir anymore, but I still like to sing when I'm alone. It was kind of tragic, really. I loved choir and sang every year in our special concerts where every grade (1-4) would have their own concerts for the school and their parents and I got to dance and stuff and later I got some solos and stuff. I was in the special 5th and 6th grade choir and made honor choir (and honor orchestra) in 6th grade. Doing double that year kind of sucked, but it had its fun moments. So then I go to junior high and was in the 7th grade choir...the teacher was nice enough, but she had her favorites (aka preppy people who can't sing) and, needless to say, I wasn't one of them. I tried out for everything, solos, show choir, you name it, I was there singing my heart out and ultimately getting it broken. What sucks the most about not getting picked was that she kept calling me back and having more auditions which ultimately wasted my time. So, my hopes and confidence dashed, I quit choir. It wasn't until last year that the damage control really started to kick in. I mean, I had stopped singing flat out for a good two years until the freshman high school's choir director began to push me to audition for the school's musical, Guys and Dolls. I didn't audition, but it was nice having someone believe I could land a singing part. What a swell guy. I won't join choir at school because my schedule is full for the next three years, but at least I am singing again.

Here is a list and a brief description of all of the instruments that I want to play:

The Guitar (Accustic)
Who dosen't?

The Drums
Again, who dosen't?

The 5-String Banjo
This is all Peter Torks' doing. I love listening to him play the banjo and he is my total inspiration for wanting to learn how to play this amazing instrument.
