Home of the forest kings

By

Vancouver Island is not just an Island. For many Canadians it is the Garden of Eden. It is one of those places that’ll steal your heart away. Around every bend in the road, there is new scenery. Living near a place called Cathedral grove, a park of virgin timber, on Vancouver Island highway number 4, I, special appreciate the park. I like to tell every body about this home of the largest forest giants, the Douglas fir trees.

Some of these trees were there long before Captain Cook came to the Nootka Sound. No doubt, the tallest trees grow on the West Coast of Canada. The mild climate, the amount of rain we get and the wind from the Pacific Ocean, are the reasons for the rapid growth and the tall trees.

We have three main species on the West Coast, the Douglas fir, Hemlock and the red Cedar. We also have a lot of spruce trees in BC more so then any other kind. The Spruce is a smaller tree and they are not much good for lumber or plywood.

They the spruce, are of real value for the pulp industry. The pulpwood is used for paper, plastic, and synthetic fibers.

The Douglas fir is king in the forest. The trees in Cathedral grove are hundreds of years. Some of these forest kings grow over 200 feet in height. It takes about 75 to 80 years for the tree to grow to maturity. Once you have seen these giants, they will remain in your memory forever. I do hope that some day you will come to see them, you will find it worth your while.

As long as we have parks like Cathedral grove and others like it, the problem of fires that could destroy them in a matter of hours, special during the hot dry spells of summer, the word of caution has to be with us.

We must be very careful with campfires, cigarettes, and lighted matches. Did you know that people being careless cause 65 % of all forest fires? Remember that Cathedral grove has been left for you, me, and our future generation to enjoy. Please take good care of it. Much pleasure to all that roam the path and enters the home of the forest kings.
