We often
hear in the Gospels that Jesus went off to pray. But rarely are we
given a glimpse into what Jesus prays. Today’s gospel gives us a
look into that personal space as we hear Jesus pray for his
disciples and all of us. Jesus prays for us, for you, for me. This
truth brings strength and joy: Jesus prays for us.
All
religious traditions have prayer of some kind. Cross culturally,
prayer is sometimes known as Sacred Intention. Nelson Mandela, who
promoted peace and reconciliation across South Africa, requested the
whole country to make a Sacred Intention each morning. This is what
they were to say: “Let us take care of the children, for they have a long way
to go. Let us take care of the elders, for they have come a long
way. Let us take care of those in between, for they are doing the
work.”
What are
your favorite prayers? (We should at least have a hundred!) How do
you begin each day?
