The Purpose of the Order of St. Aelred (O.S.Ae.)

The Order of St. Aelred, like all churches in the Philippines, is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a religious society under the St. Aelred Friendship Society. Since its incorporation, the Order has pursued its vision and carried out its mission in locations in Manila, Marikina, and currently in Quezon City.

The Constitution of the Order specifies that the General Chapter, meeting with the abbot, is the deciding authority of the Order. All those who have professed vows in the Order are members of the General Chapter.

The General Chapter elects the abbot and officers of the Order. Father Richard R. Mickley, O.S.Ae., Ph. D. is presently the abbot.

The Order is a modern-day society which has provisions for options regarding monastic lifestyle. Some monks and sisters follow a calling to live and pursue their ministry in the community. The Rule allows some to arrange with the abbot to pursue their profession or business in the world with qualifying time and service with the community.

Similarly the unique seminary of the Order under the tutelage of qualified monks, sisters, and scholars in the various disciplines makes it possible for women and men to complete studies for the Holy Priesthood at a pace agreed upon between the candidate and the Dean of St. Aelred Seminary.

The purpose of the Order of St. Aelred is to lead its members and others into a life in union with God while living as the Lord Jesus taught: "By this will all know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

For this end, it shall be a religious society, a Christian religious order devoted to prayer, study, teaching, preaching.

For this end, it shall provide monasteries as needed, a Center for the Study of Spirituality and Sexuality, and friendship and self-support projects.

For this end its works of charity and Christian social action shall be carried out.

For this end, all its works shall be directed, aimed at building a better world free of discrimination, wherein all will experience the unconditional love of God in accordance with John 3:16.

The Logo is Sicut in caelo et in terra, alluding to the unity of heaven and earth, spirituality and sexuality. IPSE, self or person, alludes to the wholistic unity of the Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual and Emotional components of human wholeness.
