Will the Assembly make a difference?

Ciaran Mulholand

The government of Northern Ireland is once again in the hands of the local political parties. A new Executive is up and running, dominated by Sinn Fein and the DUP. The fact that Sinn Fein and the DUP have come together is trumpeted by many commentators, and the British and Irish governments, as a turning point. Read more here..

Water Charges... Cuts... Privatisation - The things they all agree on

Ciaran Mulholland

The new Executive has adopted an unashamed neo-liberal tone from the outset. Politicians from all the main parties, prominent business people and commentators all agree that business pays too much tax and that working people don’t pay enough. All agree that we are "too dependent" on the public sector and our salvation lies in private sector growth. Read more here..

A new voice for the working class is needed

Gary Mulcahy

There is no opposition within the Assembly to the right-wing agenda the Executive will try to implement. But outside of Stormont, hundreds of thousands of working people will be forced to come out in opposition to attacks on pay and conditions, privatisation, water charges and cuts in public services. Peter Hadden

The idea that power sharing, as now exists at Stormont, will end the conflict and lay the national question once and for all to rest, is not borne out by international experience. Read more here..

Raytheon - Defend the right to protest

Socialist Party Statement 18th August 2006

The bail conditions placed on the nine anti-war protestors who occupied the Raytheon factory in Derry are a serious infringement of the right to free speech and to peacefully protest. One of the conditions set by the court was that the nine would not take part in meetings or activities of the anti-war movement, public or private. More here....

The Revolutionary Role of Youth

An essential document from the archives, from 1987. To build a revolutionary party, Marxists must orientate the bulk of their work towards the youth. This has been borne out by the experience of the Bolsheviks and of the Marxists in the more recent period. Read the rest of this document.

New Pamphlet: We Won't Pay! - How to defeat water charges

By Gary Mulcahy

The government has ignored the overwhelming opposition to the introduction of water charges in Northern Ireland and plans to introduce them in April 2007. In response, the Socialist Party has played a central role in building the We Won't Pay Campaign in order to build support for mass non-payment of the charges. For those who wish to hear how a campaign of mass non-payment can be built, this pamphlet is a must read. It is also a damning critique of the politicians who agreed in principle to introduce water charges during the last Assembly, and outlines the need for a socialist alternative for workers, youth and the unemployed. Make sure to order your copy today.

Price is £3/Euro5 and is available from Socialist Party, 13 Lombard St Belfast BT1 1RB Tel 028 90 232962
