Using Backgrounds On Your Web Page
One of the easiest and most effective ways to add zip to a web page is achieved by using a background image. After you find an appropriate background image, simply add the following to the BODY tag of your HTML document. BACKGROUND="image.gif"
Where image.gif is the name and extension (gif or jpg) of the image file to be used as your background. If the image file is smaller than the user's window, the image will tile to fill the entire page.
Things to keep in mind
- Keep your background image files as small as possible, by using few colors, and a lower resolution. By keeping image files small, your page will load faster.
- Save loading time by using the same background image on all pages within a document. After the image has loaded on the first page, each subsequent page will use a cached version to load the images quickly.
- The background image should not detract from the readability of your page, but instead make it more attractive. Adjust your text, link, vlink colors and size of text if needed.
- If you change your text, link and vlink colors to accomodate your background, make sure that the text is still readable if graphics are not loaded. Change your background color if needed.
- Use an image editing program to increase the brightness and decrease the contrast in order to soften the background, so it doesn't distract from the foreground text and images.
- You can use gif or jpg image files for backgrounds. Many image editing programs will allow you to convert other types of image files into gif or jpg formats.
