What's ViewS?

Ever read a long text with your standard DOS-textviewer and got irritated up to a headache by that jumpy and "unsmooth" movement of the text  when you had to scroll?  Then you could give ViewS a try. I tried to make it as ergonomic, comfortable and intuitive as possible while keeping it at a reasonable size.

ViewS is a highly customizable fullscreen text-viewer which does scroll the text not textline by textline but pixel by pixel (of course with adjustable speed) - what makes long texts much more pleasant to read.
(By the way, that type of scrolling is called soft- or smooth-scrolling. Therefore ViewS.)

Another important (at least IMHO) feature is the powerful and blazing fast search function of ViewS.
It allows you to search for simple patterns (with optional casetolerance and whole word-limitation) or even for boolean expressions.
Of course ViewS contains also all the usual features like wordwrapping, printing and so on. For a detailed list of features and requirements of ViewS, read this.

Current version

Please go to the download-page for the last release, or the current beta-version.
(The purpose of that page is to see how often ViewS is downloaded. Just some automated feedback. ;-)

Last release of ViewS is V2.00            (see history, description, documentationfor information)

Current beta-version of ViewS is  V2.01beta6    (see history, description, documentationfor information)

(read version history, to see all changes)
Changes in V2.01beta6 since V2.00:

  • added fuzzysearch (the former tolerant search got real fuzzy now :-)
  • fixed: error at adding entries to inputhistory (searching; filenames) when SHARE was loaded
  • again fixed some more bugs :-)
  • added multifile search (supports enhanced DOS wildcards; E.g. C:\*TEST*.* ; *:\*.TXT  ;  C:F:E:\DATA\*.*  )
  • fixed bug: ViewS runs on Matrox VGA cards now
  • fixed some more bugs
  • added special support for VGA emulations (like windowed Linux DOSEMU or NT DOS box)
  • some minor changes
  • new search interface (options directly changeable; better look :-)
  • settings can be saved now directly in ViewS
  • 'simple search' can be tolerant now (6 tolerance levels) (more loose distribution of words)
  • boolean-search: Expressions with AND-linked subexpression can have a tolerance-value (in %) now

  •

    Changes in V2.00:

  • fixed 2 serious bugs:
  • boolean search should work now  (I was just too stupid to reset a certain register to zero...)
  • input history won't crash at entries with a length above 70 char anymore
  • New features in V1.99:
  • boolean search
  • input history
  • goto linenumber/fileoffset

  •
  • please read the version history for a complete listing of the changes

    Who's Obiwan?

    That's me. I wrote ViewS.
You don't want to know more about me...  (Laming around since 1977; 80% of my time gets that CPU-driven thing (coding, playing Quake2,...); rest spent with (SF-)books (Shadowrun, Battletech and others), TV, sleeping and eating - and finally my studies in computer science - what a live - stupid me)

If you want to contact me, try  obiwan@comports.com
    Or, directly to tobias.winkler@s1998.tu-chemnitz.de

You could also try to reach my on an IRCNet-server where I'm hanging around as Obiwan` (usually on #duk or #csn_users_org).
