ashigaru - foot soldier
authorization - certifies that a combatant knows the safety requirements and
allows fighter to fully participate in combat
authorized fighter - a term from the nanbanjin club for a fighter who has
attained authorization
bardic - a nanbanjin term, refers to singing drumming and other performing arts
bokken - wooden practice sword
bokuto - another word for wooden practice sword
bosen - fighting on the defensive... a defensive battle
bu - coin, money
bugei - martial combat
bugu kake - weapon rack
buke - officers of the bushi class
bushi - warriors of the clan
bushido - the code of a warrior
cha - tea
cha-no-yu - tea cerimony
-chan - suffix, young one-an endearing term for a child or lover
chinxei - medieval term for kyushu
cho - 2.94 acres
chokkatsuchi - lord's personal territory... his personal property
chugen - term occasionally used to describe ashigaru
clan elder - the high ranking members of a shiro
clan master - the chapter coordinater... the leader of each shiro usually a
Daimyo or joshu
Daimyoden - masters of the clan
daisho - the katana and wakizashi sword combination worn by the samurai
dai-kyu - long bow
die tsuchi - war hammer
doji - castle
domo arigato - thank you very much
domo arigato gozaimasu - thank you very, very much
eta - the unclean, the lowest cast who do the dirtiest jobs, such as burying the
dead
fundoshi - loincloth
funsen - a brave battle; to fight bravely
garb - clothes related to your persona that is worn in reenactment
ganbari masu - don't give up
gempuku - cerimony one goes through when reaching the Ichiban rank and becoming
an official member of the clan... varies from shiro to shiro
gennin - attendants to the samurai
giri - a term implying a debt of gratitude, obligation or a sense of duty, honor
gumin - "stupid commoners"
gun kimono - "war tale"
gun sen - folding war fan made of metal
hachimaki - traditional white head cloth for under helmet
honjin - headquarters of Daimyo or campaign
horagai - conch-shell used as a signalling device
hoshi - arrow head (also a battle formation)
junshi - the act of following ones late lord in death
kaho - Daimyo house law
kan - 1,000 mon
kanjo - letter of commendation given by Daimyo
kanshi - seppuku to get a point across
ken - equal to 1.818 meters or 6 shaku
keppan - "blood seal" cut fourth finger on left hand and
kerai - retainer
kirishitan - christian
kirisutogomen - right of the samurai to slay disrespectful members of the lower
classes
kogeki - attack, offensive strike
kokei - a successor
koku - 44.8gal of rice... that was used to measure an individual's wealth
koto - 13-stringed board zither popular in courts since Heian
kubi bukuro - "head bag" netted bag used to carry heads
makoto - sincerity, pureness of intention
mishi - a complete newcomer who doesn't have a name yet
mon - coat of arms
moto dori - topknot
namban - "southern barbarians"
nanbanjin - the european and other personaes we are in the midst of...
ninjerks - while ninpo is perfectly period, ninjerk is a derogatory SCA term for
those that wear ninja outfits in broad daylight or claim to be ninja
onchi - a reward of land given by a Daimyo
oni - an ogre
ransen - "chaos battle"
ri - 2.445 liniar miles
ryo - unit of gold currency
saihai - baton carried by leaders to aid in direction of troops
samurai - bushi born into nobility... NOT to be confused with knights whom were
made... the SCA states that all members are considered to be of noble birth so
the Genji are free to take samurai personaes
sashimono - banners affixed to the back of armour
shinobi - period term for ninja
shiro - chapter of clan Genji
yoroi - body armour; our armour has MANY different names, thus the use of yoroi
as a generic term
