FIFTY: The Challenge

50 is the hardest number that you will ever do.
There are no movies, no rock songs to help you through.
It’s harder than getting a driver’s license
Harder than getting a date
Harder than going thru college
I reckon it is even harder
than pushing a baby into life.

Because all these are about starting something new
But 50 is when you realize
that all things come to an end.
There’s no lover to meet
Or career to make life complete
Going back to school isn’t going to fix your life
In fact there’s not much you can do
except lay back and accept
the leaky plumbing and overage car
the job you can’t stand and the weekends you live for.

So what do you do when you go over the hill
and find no rainbow on the other side?
The challenge that’s left is to answer that question.

I’ll tell you a tale of Warsaw in 1942
About some brave folks who knew
that the train was coming to take them all
But still they played piano and taught their kids
and fought for their dignity.

As for us, we know that there’s a train
that will come for all of us too.
How will we pass the time until it arrives?
The challenge that’s left is to answer that question.
If you can pass this test
If you can look past the disillusion
and find the good music, the exquisite colors
the singing and dancing moments with those you love
If you can catch sight of the dawn sky
and the deer leaping in the forest
And say “That’s what it’s about!”
You’ve got an A plus in life
