Series Synopsis

First off, I would like to warn you that this synopsis is based mainly on the anime version of Sailor Moon, with a few parts interpreted from the manga (such as the explaination of the past). Now, brace yourselves. This is going to get EXTREMELY confusing...

-----

To use a few keywords, Sailor Moon is both a romance and a fantasy. It begins with Tsukino Usagi (called Serena in the English dubbed version), a 14-year-old junior high student, who is late for class. On her way, she runs into a black cat with a bandaid on its head. She runs into this cat again on her way home from school when she sees it being tormented by a group of young boys. She rescues the cat and removes the bandaid on its forehead to reveal a crescent moon shaped bald spot. This encounter lands Usagi a job as a superheroine fighting against evil to save the Earth. The cat was actually a talking cat from the past who felt power coming from Usagi and assumed her to be a Sailor Senshi (called Sailor Scouts in the English dubbed version) - mystical warriors from the cat's past who were reincarnated.

An uprising of negative power, coming from an evil place known as the NegaVerse, had caused this cat to go in search of the Sailor Senshi so that the world might be saved. Eventually Usagi, now known as Sailor Moon when she transforms, meets up with other Sailor Senshi: Mizuno Ami (Amy) / Sailor Mercury, Hino Rei (Raye) / Sailor Mars, Kino Makoto (Lita) / Sailor Jupiter, Aino Minako (Mina) / Sailor Venus. They band together to defeat the NegaVerse and its ruler, Queen Beryl. Oh and don't let me forget! Before Sailor Moon found any other senshi to help her, she was aided by the mysterious Tuxedo Mask. He would always help her just as she was about to be hurt either by sweeping her up into his arms or by throwing a steel-tipped rose to block the assault. His mission, like that of the Sailor Senshi, was to find a princess that haunted his dreams and something called the ginzuishou (Silver Imperium Crystal). En route to collecting parts of this powerful crystal, he is revealed to be Chiba Mamoru (Darien), a boy who Usagi kept getting into arguments with, as well as Prince Endymion from the past. Usagi, in turn, was found to be the princess that everyone was looking for: Princess Serenity.

This leads me to my next explanation - that of the past that everyone came from. It was called the Silver Millenium. It was a time of peace and happiness when humans not only lived on the Earth, but the Moon and all of the nine planets as well. The Moon was the leader of this Silver Millenium and was, therefore, the target for evil when it arose from the Earth. This evil, in the form of Queen Beryl who was possessed by an entity known as Metallia, brainwashed soldiers from Earth in order to destroy the Silver Millenium and all who lived at that time. Queen Beryl's main target was Princess Serenity of the Moon. The only reason why Metallia was able to possess Beryl in the first place was because she had fallen in love with Prince Endymion (who lived on Earth) and became insanely jealous when he fell in love with the princess and not her. This jealousy leads Beryl to personally attack the princess. Unfortunately, the prince intercepts her attack and it is he who ends up stabbed through the chest. In her grief, Princess Serenity takes the sword out of his back and kills herself with it so that she may always be together with Endymion. After all of this melodrama, Metallia finally succeeds in destroying the Silver Millenium and everyone in it except for Queen Serenity - the mother of the late Princess Serenity. The Queen is filled with sorrow when she sees that everything has been demolished, including her daughter, and becomes determined to let everyone have another chance. To do this, the Queen uses her ginzuishou (the source of her power, fed by her own life force) to send all of the children of the Silver Millenium into the future. However, the only way that she can do this is if she also sends Metallia and the rest of the NegaVerse into the future as well. And so, everyone is sent 1000 years into the future without their memories of this tragic past in the hopes of having a better life. The Queen knows that Metallia will eventually come to power again and, therefore, knows that the female warriors from all of the planets will be needed again. To make sure that these warriors - these Sailor Senshi - remember their past so that they can fight, the Queen tells her two advisors to find them and train them when they wake up in the future. These two advisors are Luna and Artemis and both are talking cats! They promise her they will and are sent in capsules into the future with everyone else via the Queen's last ounce of power and life force. All of this history is revealed to the senshi on their way to fight Beryl and Metallia in the future. They are all killed in this battle - senshi, Mamoru and Usagi - but the power of the crystal and Usagi's own wish (she wanted a normal life without youma/monsters or crystals or destinies) brought everyone back to life without their memories...it was as if nothing happened.
