Mina
MINA SPENCER
a.k.a. Mina Aino
Of all the girls, far and
away I had the hardest time pegging down Mina's personality as, in my
opinion (And I'm sure someone who's a fan of Venus will e-mail me and
argue this point to the death!), she wasn't at all unique to me. Mina
wasn't a lovable, klutzy airhead like Serena, a shy, introverted
genius like Amy, a hotheaded temple priestess like Raye or a
bighearted, outgoing romantic like Lita. They were easy to figure
out. Mina was just....there, nothing more. There wasn't much of
anything that set her apart from the others in my eyes. That made
writing about her in my stories quite a chore at the start as I
didn't quite know what made Mina tick. Then, I dug a little deeper
and discovered that there was more to Mina than I realized..
Case in point: Mina was
technically the very first Sailor Scout. Before Luna bestowed Serena
with her powers, Mina was already fighting the forces of evil over in
England as Sailor V, thus explaining her popularity in Japan as
Serena could be regularly seen playing a Sailor V video game at the
arcade. When Mina arrived in Tokyo to save the Scouts from Zoicite
and Malachite as Sailor Venus, she was awed by everyone, and Mina,
clearly not lacking in the ego department basked in the adoration. It
was from there that I begun to understand Mina a great deal more as
she displayed a relentlessly cheerful personality and an undefeatable
spirit at everything she does, be it fighting the Negaverse, playing
volleyball or pursuing her dream of being an star.
Writing about Mina has
proven to be a challenge, one I was glad to take up, and I think the
results have so far been quite satisfying. Combining her
cheerfulness, her ambition to be famous, her boychasing ways and her
comical habit of fouling up sayings, Mina is a most intriguing
character. In the third story I wrote, "The Resurrection Dilemma", I
established a close relationship between Mina and Lita whom I've
envisioned as being best friends like Haruka and Michiru. Don't ask
me to explain it, but it just seemed natural for Mina to be deeply
fond of Lita and to love her like the sister she never had. For Mina,
her mission is to spread happiness, and her wonderful spirit keeps
everyone upbeat as she shines brightly like the sun.
