I went to The Cactus Club to see a new band called The Cotton Squares one Friday night. There were a couple of unmemorable (and therefore nameless) bands that opened for them; the first one was lousy, and I felt that the club management should have forcefully removed the second from the stage after their first song. However, after that act, the Squares came on, and the night changed completely. The band has a great stage presence, which seems to light up the entire club. Their lead singer is a flurry of activity, jumping madly around the stage. The drummer is a silent, aggressive type, who beats his drums like a red-headed stepchild. The bassist is very cool and lays down a groovy foundation for the rest of the band. The last member, the rhythm guitarist, has some of the hottest rhythm licks I've heard in a while.

This group is undoubtedly the greatest rock and roll band I've ever witnessed. Like all great acts, listening to them made me want to pick up a guitar and form my own band, but I fear that their raw talent would only serve to point out my numerous shortcomings.
