Jan Gentry Chat Transcript

SURVIVOR Host: Hi everyone! We're now joined by Jan. Hi Jan!

Survivor Jan: Hey, guys! Thank y'all for supportin' us!

Visitor: Jan, you seemed resigned to go once it came to the Final Four. Were you willing to settle for 3rd or 4th place, or did you find yourself stuck in this position? How so?

Survivor Jan: I kinda felt like yes, I was stuck in that position. If it had been Ted, Helen and me, I think it still would've been Ted and Helen, and if it was Brian and Clay, then I'm still third man out. Although Helen and I were real close, I just don't know. Helen would have gone with Ted, because I think she works with men, but I don't know! We could've been the Final Two but it didn't work out.

Visitor: Jan, if you could change anything you did, what would it be?

Survivor Jan: I know I would've talked to Helen more. We didn't communicate enough. It would've changed the outcome; it really might have.

Visitor: How did it feel to get lost with Helen on the boat ride?

Survivor Jan: [laughs] Oh, I got tired, and she was tired, and she was getting a little cross! [laughs] We used a lot of energy and that was the bad part.

Visitor: The Slip through Your Fingers Immunity Challenge looked like it hurt. Do you remember what it felt like? If so, what did it feel like?

Survivor Jan: The torture was hard! What's funny is when Clay, Brian and I saw it, we all three looked at each other, and we all said that it was awful. That made me feel good. I am 20 years older than Brian, and I saw him even grimace, so I felt like I was hanging with him even though I was older.

Visitor: Jan, were you happy that Brian won over Clay?

Survivor Jan: Yes, I voted for Brian, and I think because Clay barked orders at Helen and me all the time while he lay down, that got on my nerves, and frankly, Brian could have won more Challenges. He was very smart, because you know if you win too many Challenges you get voted off. So he tried to win the important ones. He could have probably won almost every one of them. That's very wise.

Visitor: Jan, did your first grade class do anything special for you when you returned from Thailand?

Survivor Jan: [laughs] They had bats and spiders all over my room, and all this green foliage out like it was Thailand! So yes, there were spiders and snakes all in my mailbox and everything. They'd made a crown for me to wear, and it was hysterical! Stuffed crabs and bats! [laughs]

Visitor: Who were your favorite and least favorite Survivors on the show?

Survivor Jan: The top five I was closest with, and we really had a tight bond because of how hard we had to work and scrimp. After Tanya went, we didn't lose another Challenge, and that really put us tight together. My least favorite, because I didn't know him, I just didn't know him, but now I've gotten to know him, was Robb. But he is a nice guy; he's just young.

Visitor: Jan, you are so sweet! Do you feel like your emotions helped or hindered your progress in the game?

Survivor Jan: I don't know, that's just how I am. I can't be anything other than the way I am naturally. I'm very sensitive, especially if you talk about animals or my family or my kids. I just had to be me, which was natural.

Visitor: Jan, most people think you are the sweetest person on the show. So tell us, did you do ANYTHING bad?

Survivor Jan: [laughs] Yeah, I did find the wine bottle a coupla times! Y'know, I just tried to play it without backstabbin' or lyin' and cheatin', and that's kind of hard in a game like this. If you can't be nice, then that's just the way it is.

Visitor: What were the grossest things you ate?

Survivor Jan: I think the slugs off the walls. It was the grossest thing I had to eat, but they never showed it. We had to scrape slugs off the wall and then we had to take them back and boil 'em and scrape off the shell, cut it down the middle like an armadillo and then eat them. But they had protein, so that's why we ate 'em.

Visitor: Jan, what's Jeff like?

Survivor Jan: He is great! He really monitors the contestants. He gets on 'em when they're not doing the rules right. He doesn't have time when they're not following the rules. It irritates them because someone could get hurt. He laughs though; he can have fun. He's a doll, really. Now, my son Jeff was also out there, and he ate those bugs, and he doesn't eat anything. He's a freako! He doesn't eat anything strange at all. He was a trouper to do that; he was a superstar in my eyes.

Visitor: Hi Janny! Is your son single? He's hot.

Survivor Jan: [laughs] Amanda, he IS single, he's 26 and he is a doll-baby. He's a sweet man!

Visitor: Jan, what's your favorite type of beer?

Survivor Jan: [laughs] I like Sam Adams, Becks, some heavier beers.

Visitor: Jan, if you won Immunity, would you have taken Clay or Brian?

Survivor Jan: Probably Clay, because I think he irritated more people. Because I didn't see all that stuff that Brian was saying in the background until now.

Visitor: Do you feel that Brian backstabbed Helen, or vice versa, towards the end of the game?

Survivor Jan: I think Helen felt that Brian backstabbed her bad. She had a lot of trust in their relationship, and she was totally blown away that she was voted off.

Visitor: Hey Jan, why didn't you align with Helen and Ted to take out Brian and Clay?

Survivor Jan: Because Helen came to me and said that we were going to vote Clay out. That meant Helen, Ted and myself, and then right before we got on the boat to Tribal Council, she said "No, it's going to be Ted." I stuck with Helen, and apparently Brian said we were going after Ted. I think it was him, because he was the only one that had a chance in any upcoming Challenges because of his strength. But Helen had talked to me about it because we'd talked about all three of us going in together.

Visitor: Jan, has your opinion of Brian changed now that you see what he was saying in the background? How do you feel about him now?

Survivor Jan: I'm crazy about Brian; no, it doesn't change. Y'know, it was a game, and you need the showmanship of that to make the show interesting. No, that does not bother me.

Visitor: If you could select any of the participants (except yourself) as the winner, who would you pick?

Survivor Jan: The one I actually think played it the very best was Brian. He went in there with a mission, he was focused, he did a lot of clever things and I think he outwitted, outplayed and outlasted, absolutely. He did it. He got Ted to believe in him, to trust in him...everybody! He didn't p*** anybody off. He worked; he wasn't lazy. I think he orchestrated the whole thing, and I think he deserved to win: it IS a game! He got people to believe and trust him. As he always told me, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Visitor: Jan, what kind of people were you looking for when you picked your tribe?

Survivor Jan: Actually, I looked for people that could compensate for what I couldn't do. I knew I couldn't make a fire and John could. I needed strength. I'm pretty strong for a woman, but I'm 54, so I had to get some people that were strong. I saw Helen really paying attention during training, so I thought she could tell what plants were good. We had never said one word to any of these people, so I had to go on just observation. I remember them saying you're always in the game. You're playing the game every second. So I tried to observe what people could do that I couldn't do. I didn't know I was going to be a picker! I was horrified!

Visitor: Jan, when you made the animal graveyard I thought it was so cute! How many animals did you end up burying?

Survivor Jan: [laughs] Just two: Oscar the bat and Lucky, who became unlucky. I told Lucky if he just laid an egg he'd have a chance of livin', but he just didn't do it!

Visitor: Who has been your favorite Survivor of all time?

Survivor Jan: I really liked Kathy. I liked her a lot, and she's kind of like Helen. I just thought that she was really good. I like the ones that have a lot of personality. Tom was fun and the judge (Paschal). Elisabeth was real nice; I liked her too.

Visitor: Jan, were you surprised by any questions at the Final Tribal Council?

Survivor Jan: Yes, I was! I really didn't really remember Helen saying let's make an alliance. I really didn't remember that. When we would go to get water or walk up and down the beach lookin' for shells, we never talked about a thing. That was special for us, because everyone else was hittin' on ya all the time, especially Jake. That was just our time. We'd talk about our families, divorces, marriages...we worshipped out children. That's what we talked about.

Visitor: How many articles of clothing were you allowed to bring?

Survivor Jan: Obviously, that darlin', precious bathing suits and my overalls, that was a good item but doesn't dry in the bat cave! They stayed damp the whole time. Two long-sleeved t-shirts, a pair of khakis, two pairs of socks, running shoes, water shoes a jog bra and a hat.

Visitor: Which day was the hardest of them all?

Survivor Jan: Probably right before we got midway through, the half point, where we could start counting downward, 19, 18...when we thought we were going to survive this sucker!
