The numbers before the names depict the generation. I start over a new paragraph with each of my family members so that I may write the family history as I learn it. In 1831 my member took his family to IL therefore I do not have anymore history on his siblings than what I have here now. My search is to find their descendants to add to this tree. I have much more information on this family, but have primarily listed my ancestors to track my family line. Most of this information comes from The William Buckingham Family: Margaret A. COOKE and Ruth HANNEMAN; the Caleb Forbes Family Bible; James, Bailey and Wm's Wills; Jesse Forbes Pugh's compilation of Forbes in the county records and his conversations with Ruth Hannaman therefore her family tree and Willard Forbes and Roger Hanneman. If you need information, please email me.

Historical data:
James Forbes came from Scotland abt. 1678. The VA state library lists a James Forbush on the ship, Two Brother, bound for Jamaica and his name is found in VA tax records with 100 acres of land in Modest, Accomack Co., VA. It isn't sure what his wifes surname is, 3 possibilities. Jan. 10, 1696 there is a James Forbush marrying Eliza GARRET in Barbados (Eliza can be Alice); Alice whom he is found living with in 1701 along with a Lewis and Hester KNIGHT family; together these families move to NC. note: James and Alice are listed in 1701 with 6 children, there would have to be either a prior marriage or twins. Her surname could be Knight due to this family moving with them or CLASSON due to her name occurring once in VA records with a Jno Forbush and then disappearing hence marriage. James' land was sold in April 1701 and on October 20, 1701, Colonial Records of NC, Vol. 1, show an Isaac Giford "stood" for admission of James, wife and 6 children in Camden Co, N.C. It would be 1715 before they bought 532 acres on the east side of the Pasquotank River, at Riddle (formerly known as Forbes then Bray), NC. This land would be deeded before their death, as a gift (which seemed to be an early Forbes custom), 100 acres each to their sons in 1719, Edward receiving their home and 132 acres. According to Willard Forbes research, this Forbes family was the only Forbes to settle here and a monument has been erected on Pond Rd, Riddle, NC to honor them (See the link at the bottom of this page). Note: The NC area county in 1701 was Pasquotank, in 1777 Camden Co. was divided from Pasquotank Co.

Caleb Forbes / Mary CURLING, m. 1-18-1808, her f. Josiah Curling, mo. Mary ?, (The Curlings are found in 1790 Camden Co., census with 2 sons and 2 daughters). Caleb was a first settler of Hopewell, IL; after travelling by horseback from NC in 1830 to see that area he sold his land in NC and by April of 1831 moved by covered wagon thru NC, TN, KY, IN, to Marshall Co., IL with a Jesse SAWYER family; it took them 5 months arriving 9-02-1831. According to Records of Olden Times or 50 Years on the Praire by Spencer Ellsworth, p.395, Caleb would start a Saw Mill on the south side of Sandy Creek and buy a total of 640 acres at $1.25/acre. They first lived in a the hollow of a very large tree while a cabin was being built. Caleb would retire to Henry, IL to live with daughter, Courtney, until his death. They are buried at Forbes farm cemetery in Hopewell; N. of Varna and W. 10 miles. This information came from an interview with Caleb Forbes in 1959, he was the current owner of Linwood Farm at that time. In 2000 I visited this land, homes are gone and the farmland cemetery in ruin. note: It has been incorrectly listed in IL histry that Caleb married a Mary Lindsey after Mary Curling.
