Pagan Networking Offline

This section is exclusively about networking and meeting Pagans without using the internet. Didnt think it was possible? Well it is! Much will be dependant on where you live and what is going around your location. Most of the things I write about here I have tried myself. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or methods to add- please contact me.

A few key points:

When trying to meet people whom you do not know in your local area use common sense. There are people out there whose motives may not be trustworthy. There are also people out there who are just different than you are with different values, ideas, and lifestyles. Be respectful of their values and privacy but also be cautious. If you are concerned about safety and privacy consider getting a pager, voicemail, or a PO BOX to use in your networking endeavors instead of your home or work phone number and address.
Should you use your common name or your Pagan name? That is really up to you. Your Pagan name may attract other Pagans and save you from posting your legal name all over. But your common name may seem more honest. Do whatever you are comfortable with.

Where do Pagans hang out?

I want to attend local celebrations, public rituals, or sabbats.

I want to meet other Pagans for friendship, study, or group activities.

I want to join a Coven.

Where do Pagans hang out?

Pagans hang out almost all the same places non Pagans hang out. But some places attract Pagans more than others. Shops that sell mystical products, tarot cards, incense, candles, crystals, divination tools, herbs, occult supplies, and the like. Bookstores that specialize in the above mentioned items or any bookstore with an occult, pagan, witchcraft, wicca, magick section. Dont be affraid to go into these shops or even shops that seem eccentric, mystical, earthy, hippy-dippy... you never know what you may find! Also healthfood or organic food stores, outdoor weekend markets, psychic fairs, and renaissance faires.

I want to attend local celebrations, public rituals, or sabbats.

Large gatherings like public celebrations, rituals, or sabbats can be a safe, fun way to meet others. They can be held in very publice places like parks or private locations like people's back yards. To find events like these near you look for posters, flyers, advertisements in local shops. Look in the events are in Pagan friendly magazines, newspapers. Get on mailing lists for local Pagan groups, even if its in the town or state - they may still information valuable to you. When you attend a public event bring along a notepad and pen to write down information. You may meet some nice people or there maybe an information booth for local groups. If you live in a small town or rural are you may need to travel to attend events but it can be worth the trouble to meet others.

I want to meet other Pagans for friendship, study, or group activities.

If you are looking for friendship or more one on one interactions going to a large event could lead to meeting some great people. But if you are the shy or more private type try these ideas. Look for personal ad's for Pagans looking for others. I know this sounds like a dating service but it can also work for regular folks. Look in Pagan newspapers, magazines, or in local shops on the bullentin board. If you do not find others' advertising consider posting your own ad. ( I did this and now I have my own networking group. ) To ensure privacy use a special Pagan name, voice mail, or po box address. If you see that there is small number interested people in your area you can schedule to meet on a regular basis perhaps in a local cafe or book shop. You can advertise as a group looking for others. This is great for a networking or study group.

Here are sample ideas of what you can write in an advertisment:

"Merry Meet!
Solitary Pagan new to Craft, looking for others for friendship and study.
Main interests are Tarot, Herbs, and reading. Call for more info.
Blessed Be!"

"~Looking for others of a like mind~
Pagan new to area, looking to network and make friends.
Into the Goddess, singing, drumming, and nature. Family oriented.
Meet for tea?"

I want to join a Coven.

Locating a Coven that is looking for new members is not an easy task. If you are new to the Craft you may have some unrealistic views about Covens. Keep in mind some Covens follow a particular path (ie- Gardnerian) while others are quite eclectic. You maybe able to find a "beginers or teaching" Coven focused on training. A lot of Pagans are following the solitary path these days and take advantage of public circles to celebrate with others. If you are really set on being apart of a Coven you may need to really put the word out and be patient. Or consider starting your own Coven. If you do meet others who share your interests and beliefs but practice Solitary you may consider starting a more informal Coven that I often refer to as a Circle. You can continue to practice on your own but meet every so often for group celebrations or worship.
