My Miata Page

Welcome to my miata page! I'm not any expert in web design. You won't see fancy or stylish pages here! My main goal here is to give out infomation about my car-racing hobby. Please use my guestbook or email for any suggestion on how I can make this site better. If you want to quick steer around the pages on this site, please go to Site Mapnew. I'm trying to set up a "Next" sign for each page. If you don't know where to go first, hit no links but the "Next" at the end of each page and you'll eventually finish all my pages sequentially!

What's New

I feel bad about not updating my web site for so long. Some of my news include finding myself a new job shortly after my previous web update (Jan '99), more mechanical problems with my car, and more car modifications. All these years, my web site has always been focused on car modification/setup with no mentions on driver skills. It's unfortunate that I'm giving people a false impression of advocating car modification over driver skills. Please be aware that this web site is not about all my aspects on car-racing. While the Internet is a good place for sharing infomation for car modification/setup, improvement in driving skills is better earned from practice which I can hardly describe in words.

Recently, I changed my ISP back to my original one, so I think that this must be a good time to update my web site a bit.

My Background

I was born in Hong Kong, 1968. When I was a little kid, I started to get into mechanics and electronics because I like innovative stuff. I liked to build projects of my own design. Later when computer technology got to household level, I was addicted to it because I could "build" my projects without any per-project cost. I was lucky enough to be able to study and work in the field I like.

You may recall I was having trouble surfing the site of UBC CrestUBC EE department. I finally bother to find out why everybody else has never had the problem. And even I could go to the site from my computer at work without problem. The problem was due to conflict between IP addresses from the dial-up network and my local network. I set up my Ethernet card to use the EE IP address, some numbers that were easy to remember!

Finally, someone within our group suggested to set up a home page for the EE UBC class '92.

My Jobsnew

These are the companies I've been working for. Some people may wonder why I changed job so often. That's because I was self-employed. These jobs were contract-based. I figured I can trade-in job security for a higher pay while I'm still single. These jobs had nothing to do with Miata, but they have been keeping my hobbies and this web site running.

Since February '99, I've changed my self-employed status to full-time employee while joining Raytheon (formerly Hughes Aircraft). And yes, I'm working on the same project I did at Hughes Aircraft. In October, '99, I had a 1-month business trip to Zurich, Switzerland. There, I met Peter Baumann of Baumann Swiss MX-5 Shop and had quite a bit of a chat.

If you have one of these nice little roadsters, you'll never regret that you've ever owned one. If you think this is a girlie car, I invite you to have a ride in my autocross runs and you'll see why it's faster than a Ferrari 348!

I still miss my "ex..." not only because it brought me my 1st autocross racing trophy, but...

Autocrossing is a good way to test out my driving theories, legally and economically. Furthermore, 2-season trophiestrophies is part of the excitement. To get more information on autocrossing, check out our VCMC site. My other hobbies include R/C model cars, computer driving simulation, electronics, etc., but they don't seem to fit under this page.

Power-slidingnewMy Favorite Runs

Compared to road-racing, autocrossing is different in that only the fastest of the 3-4 runs counts. It's always tempted to push a bit more and therefore power-slides and spin-outs are quite often. In a recent tight competition with the top 5 competitors stayed within fraction of a second, I had to late-brake from a WOT at the end of 2nd gear into a corner with trail-breaking. My body was literally thrown out of the seat and landed on the side-bolster!

I got lots of spectacular moments from my camcorder archive. Power-slides, spin-outs, 3-wheel turns, etc. may worth sharing w/ car fans. Due to web storage limit here, I can only post one video clip at a time. Also apologize for the image quality after so much compression. Old clips will be archived in my home PC. You may request to email to you directly any archived clips.

In answer to requests, I'm putting some sound clips and will keep adding more.

ToolsShop Talk

I dedicated this section to share with other car fans my opinion, theories, and experience on car stuff. I try to avoid too much detail in each topic. You may not agree with some of my opinion and theories here. Any constructive feedback or request for details are welcome. Please use my guestbook or email me.
