A surprisingly depressing and dirty episode this week that merits 7 Flushes. I want to start off by saying something I have first realized (please, feel free to give me the dunce cap of the year award). Before Angel had become a vampire, he was dating a woman named Darla. After he became a vampire, he either killed her or seriously hurt her or made her a vampire, and Darla looks exactly like Kate, the police officer who has been Angel's friend and foil this season. As a matter of fact, this week Kate tells Angel that they are not friends anymore. OK, now that I've gotten this out of the way, I'll move on. Cordelia continues having visions that tell Angel about future demons but also physically cripple her. We even see the return of David Nabbitt, the computer millionaire. He stops by Angel's office to say how jealous he is that Angel gets to do such nifty things. At the office, Wes is busy translating the Prophesies of Aberjain. Wes learns that this prophesy includes a word "shanshu." Wes is not sure what the word means, but he soon learns that it means "death" and that Angel will soon die. Angel, however, barely reacts to this fact. Wes gets nervous about Angel's blasé response to death, but Cordelia says "Angel faces death all the time just like a normal guy faces waffles and french fries," Nonetheless, they decide that Angel has nothing to look forward to in life and that his entire humanity is static so he is cut off from the world, he cannot be happy, and he may be fatalistic. Wes says, "It's our desires that make us human," and Angel cannot have any desires. Cordelia decides to make Angel cheer up. She goes to Venice Beach and picks up some art supplies and hopes that art will allow Angel to express his true emotions.

In the meantime, the lawyers at Wolfram & Hart are up to no good. Lindsey is helping raise some evil force that will help Wolfram & Hart's clients. This evil force is Vocah, a warrior of the underworld. Vocah rises and shares that he needs the help of Angel and the Prophesies of Aberjain to raise a greater force, but Lindsey tells Vocah that Angel cannot help because he is good and that he has the Prophesies. Vocah then goes to the Oracles and kills them. He says, "The New Order has arrived. He that was first shall now be last and he that was dead shall now arise."

Anyway, Cordelia is at Venice Beach when Vocah walks up beside her, touches her, and walks off. I will add that although Vocah looks very much like a demon, no one notices him including Cordelia. All of a sudden, Cordelia begins to have very serious illusions about violence. She experiences the pain of these people and collapses to the ground. Cordelia has convulsions and ends up in the hospital. Angel arrives at the hospital and cannot help her, but he does notice an insignia on Cordelia's hand. While Angel is out, Vocah goes to Angel's office and steals the Prophesies. Anyway, Angel then goes to the Oracles to ask them for help, but when he arrives, he finds them dead. There is, however, a ghost of one of the oracles and this ghost tells Angel about the demon. This ghost also tells Angel that he needs the Prophesies to help snap Cordelia out of her trance of evil images. Angel then returns to his office and finds it on fire. Wes was inside the fire and he also ends up at the hospital. Angel has lost his friends, but has gained motivation and he will hunt down Vocah. Before going off, Angel has Gunn (see May 9) guard his friends at the hospital while they are cured.

Vocah, alongside Lindsey and some other members of Wolfram & Hart, magically has a box appear when Angel arrives. This box has some evil force inside of it. Angel begins to fight Vocah and Angel kills him, but now Lindsey has the Prophesies. To get the Prophesies back, Angel chops off Lindsey's hand when he refuses to hand it over. Unfortunately, the box with an evil force that may destroy the world is still in the possession of Wolfram & Hart.

Angel returns to the hospital and finds Wesley recovering from the fire. Angel then cures Cordelia with a chant written in the Prophesies. Yeah, they are all good. They return to Cordelia's apartment (because Angel no longer has a home or office) and Wes retranslates the Prophesies. He realizes that in ancient languages "death" also means "life" and that this Prophesy says "the vampire with a soul, once he fills his destiny, will become shanshu--human." This means that Angel now has something to live for and after many near apocalypses Angel will become a normal human being. Yeah! However, back at Wolfram & Hart we see the box that Vocah raised from the dead. Inside the box is Darla!!

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:You never want to be on time for a ritual. The chanting, the blood rites, they can go on forever. --Holland
END OF SEASON:

May 16, 2000

A pretty nothing-much 6 Flush episode that had only one ohmygosh. Angel is his regular fighting self when he comes across a blind woman who is almost capable of defeating Angel. He only saves his life (or death!) by running away from her. He wants to know more about this evil, blind woman so Cordelia does a police search on dangerous blind women and comes across one name...Vanessa Brewer. Brewer is actually going to be in court today. Angel goes to her courtroom and throws a knife at her, but she catches it. Of course, we are shocked that a blind woman can catch a knife that is being thrown, but she does. In addition, she gets acquitted for whatever crime she committed thanks to her attorney, Lindsey McDonald. However, when Lindsey's boss, Holland, tells Lindsey that Brewer is about to kidnap three children, Lindsey has an attack of conscience. He goes to Angel and tells Angel everything. Angel doesn't know that he can trust Lindsey, but they formulate a plan for Angel to break-in and steal some files regarding Brewer. Angel breaks in and steals the files, but he also steals some weird scroll. When he takes the scroll, an alarm goes off. Angel has time to escape, but Lindsey is unable to follow Angel. The real problem comes when the bosses of Wolfram & Hart bring in some mind readers to find out who stole what. The mind readers read everyone's mind, and Holland finds out about Lindsey's plan. However, Lindsey is such a valuable asset to the firm, that Holland does not want to kill Lindsey. Lindsey says he will consider his options. He returns to Angel where Cordelia decodes the files with the help of a phone call from Willow. Angel then rescues the kids. Wesley reads the scroll that Angel took. It's called the Prophesies of Aberjain and is in ancient Aramaic. The prophesies tell stories of Angel, and may become important in later episodes. Anyway, Lindsey returns to Holland to say good-bye. Lindsey explains that if anything happens to him that certain documents will be made public, and Wolfram & Hart will be brought down. Holland tells Lindsey that because Lindsey has so much guts that he should stay at the firm until he one day runs the place. As a matter of fact, Holland has just been promoted, and Lindsey is invited to take Holland's position. Lindsey accepts.

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: You all can cater to the demon, to the dead man? But what about the black man? --some guy to Wolfram & Hart.
NEXT WEEK: Season finale. Wolfram & Hart bring evil to life.

May 9, 2000

A pretty OK episode that didn't utilize Cordelia properly. It gets 6 Flushes. Angel gets hired by a computer millionaire named David Nabbit. David is being blackmailed by a mysterious man. The man has some pictures of David having sex with a demon. Angelgoes to a demon brothel named Madam Dorion's and finds out that the blackmailer's name is Lenny Edwards. Angel goes to Lenny and tells him to give him the pictures of David...or else. Unfortunately for Angel, a group of kids acting as street vampire hunters, led by a guy named Gunn, sees Angel as a vampire and plan on slaying him.

David is so happy to hear that Angel made contact with Lenny that he gives Angel a HUGE check. Nonetheless, Angel returns the next day for the pictures from Lenny. Lenny says he has the pictures but then releases a demon onto Angel. Angel kills the demon and steal the pictures, but Lenny gets away. However, the group of street vampire slayers come after Angel and trap him in a house of tricks that may kill Angel. Angel is finally trapped by the kids but when he rescues one of the kids from getting shot by a booby trap, the kids decide not to kill Angel even though they don't trust him. Angel returns to his home and decides that he has to stop these street slayers before they end up dead themselves. Angel finds a vampire's nest near the kids and finds out the kid's hangout. While this is going on, a group of local vampires decide to attack the kids. They plan a major raid on the kids and succeed in capturing Gunn's sister, Alonna.

Gunn now has plans to raid the vampires' home, but Angel comes and tells them not to. They lock Angel in a closet while Gunn goes into a room he suspects his sister to be in. He finds Alonna alive and well only to realize that she is a vampire. She says that she is happy to be a vampire because she is stronger now, but then she begins to attack her brother. By the way, this violates some rules of becoming a vampire: first, vampires do not remember their life before they became a vampire and second, the process of becoming a vampire is painful and one takes many days to become comfortable with one's new identity. Anyway, Alonna decides to make her brother a vampire, but he slays her. His group of street slayers soon arrive, and they almost declare war on a group of vampires that have been waiting in the wings, but Angel, who has recently escaped from the closet with the help of Cordelia and Wesley, stops the fight. Angel has the vampires leave town and reaches a truce with Gunn. Gunn says thanks for the help, but he is going to continue slaying vampires despite the consequences. Angel says he understands and that he might asks for Gunn's help in the future.

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Reality is a choice, Wesley. You see what you want to see and I'll see what I want to see. --Cordelia
NEXT WEEK: A woman gives up her vision for power.

May 2, 2000

Someone tried to convince me into giving this episode 8 or 9 Flushes, and while I admit that I enjoyed the ending, the truth remains that everything up to the ending was slow, boring, and tedious. As a result I can only give out 7 Flushes. How do Cordelia and Wesley respond to Angel's attempts at converting Faith to good? Cordelia takes a vacation while Wesley, who was almost mutilated to death by Faith, disapproves highly. Nonetheless, Angel tries and he comes close to convincing her. He tells her that she needs to apologize to people and let them into her life. Faith reflects on the fact that she has no friends and that she hurt the only person who ever tried to be her friend, Buffy. Faith says she screwed Buffy's boyfriend. Angel says that he is OK with how Faith treated him, but Faith says that she meant her comment literally and that she had sex with Buffy's new boyfriend. Angel is shocked to learn about a new boy in Buffy's life.

Before we go any further, Lindsey McDonald hires a demon assassin to kill Faith and Angel, because Faith betrayed him. The demon attacks Faith and Angel but fails at his mission. Faith stabs the demon. Having stabbed the demon, she sees blood on her hands and cries and runs into Angel's arms at which point Buffy enters the room. Buffy is ready to kill Faith, but Angel says no. Buffy goes to attack Faith, but Angel steps in the way and hits Buffy (note that he attacks Buffy even though he won't hit Faith). At this point Faith hides upstairs. Angel and Buffy talk. She says that she came because Giles heard about Faith. Buffy doesn't know what to do but does want to punish Faith. Angel tells Buffy that he knows EVERYTHING that Faith did and still forgives her.

Anyway, Lindsey is upset that his newest approach to kill Angel has failed so he goes to Kate (the police officer) and tells Kate that Faith the killer is with Angel (Faith is wanted by the police for killing a guy at a bus station). In addition, Wesley is approached by some men who work for the Council. They tell Wesley that he can get his job back as a Watcher if he helps them capture Faith. He agrees.

We now jump to climax. Wesley enters Angel's apartment and informs him, Faith, and Buffy that the Council is going to attack Faith. Apparently, Wes lied to the Council, because he knew they would hurt him if he refused to help them. Wesley, however, does not warn the gang in time, because the Council arrives with machine guns. Faith and Buffy rush to the roof to try and escape. Faith tries to apologize for her actions, but Buffy says that an apology would be very inappropriate. Faith says that the last time the two were on a roof, Buffy tried to kill Faith. Anyway, an assassin follows them to the roof and a helicopter starts shooting at them. Buffy tells Faith to stay low while she attacks the assassin. In the meantime, Angel and Wes kill two assassins in the apartment. Angel then leaps onto the helicopter and dismantles it. When he lands the helicopter, he sees Kate waiting for him. She arrests him for aiding and abetting a criminal even though no one knows where Faith has disappeared to since we last saw her on the roof. Angel arrives at jail, and Faith is already there confessing her crime. We don't know what will become of her, but she is trying to make herself better.

As for Angel and Buffy they get into a big fight over how to treat Faith; the fight snowballs to other issues. Buffy reflects that her new life is great, because she has a boyfriend whom she can trust. He is honest and loving. Angel says that he doesn't want Buffy around, because he can't move on and he can't have a new girlfriend (because of the true happiness that makes him evil Angelus) and that everytime Buffy appears, she reminds him of what he lost. He says that he has to be good to Faith, because she has found her soul and can now repent. We realize now why Angel is helping Faith; he went through what she went through in finding a soul. But Buffy gets upset at this thought and says, "I'm sorry I can't join your little club. I haven't killed anyone." I loved the friction

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: I gotta be the first slayer in history counseled by a vampire. --Faith on Angel helping her.
QUOTE 2: For a taciturn, shadowy guy I sure have a big mouth. --Angel.
NEXT WEEK: Evil people in LA.

April

April 25, 2000

A pretty OK episode of Angel that expanded the show's possibilities, but was not too great in and of itself. I'll give it 6 Flushes. The episode begins when Angel saves a man named Marquez from being killed by a bunch of demons. Angel then convinces Marquez to testify in court against a drug dealer and murderer. Cordelia says that Angel will never be able to make Marquez testify, because Marquez is inherently evil, but Angel does convince Marquez. Marquez then testifies against a client of Wolfram and Hart...in particular, a client of Lindsey McDonald.

Lindsey is so upset about Angel's meddling that he takes advantage of a rumor that a rampage slayer is in town. Lindsey finds Faith and offers her big bucks to kill Angel. Faith agrees. Her first attempt fails. She comes up from behind Angel and shoots at his back with a crossbow, but Angel manages to catch the crossbow between his hands...a very cool move. Angel now knows that he is being hunted, but he does not want to kill Faith...he still wants to redeem her. Wesley says that there is no chance Faith can be redeemed. Angel reminds Wesley that last year he had almost made Faith good again until Wesley came with the Watcher's Council and kidnapped Faith. (note the parallel to the Marquez situation)

Faith decides to kidnap Wesley to get Angel. Faith does some major torture to Wesley and comes close to killing him, but Angel shows up to save Wes. Faith and Angel get into a big fight and jump out of a window. They both survive and the fight continues. However, we soon realize that Angel is not fighting back. Wes sees a different picture and thinks Angel is in danger so he takes a knife to go kill Faith, but he has to take the stairs. While Wes is in transit, Faith tells Angel that he has to fight back, and that he cannot change her. She begins to insist that she is evil and a bad person. But then she collapses in Angel's arms. By the time Wes arrives, Faith is no longer a threat. Faith wants to be loved. Wes drops his knife to the ground and waits to see what will happen as do we, the audience.

FAITH'S FIVE BASIC TORTURE GROUPS: Blunt, sharp, hot, cold, and loud.
QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: You can always tells when he's [Angel's] happy. His scowl is a little less. --Cordelia

I was told that I should not give up on Angel, because it had gotten better. Boy oh boy, were the people that told me right as evidenced by this 8 Flush episode. Angel is hanging out with Cordelia and Wesley by a movie premiere when Angel notices that a car is about to crash into a woman. Angel pushes the woman out of the way and saves her life. As it turns out this woman is Rebecca Lowell, a famous television actress. Rebecca was on a TV series for the past nine years, but now can not get work because she is too old. Too old for Rebecca is in her mind twenties. Anyway, Rebecca comes to believe that her life is in danger so she hires Angel to be her bodyguard. While watching over Rebecca, Angel stops an intruder who has entered Rebecca's house and has shot some bullets at her. The thief/murderer leaves the house, and Rebecca and Angel are alone. She comes to say thank you to him and turns to a mirror in her house at which point she realizes that Angel has no reflection. As she notices this, the police arrive at Rebecca's house after reports of gunfire. Angel disappears. After the police have left the house, Angel reappears to speak with Rebecca. She says that she knows he is a vampire and that she is OK with that. So now Rebecca and Angel are getting along really well, and we hear conversation between Wes and Cordelia about Angel having sex with Rebecca. Wes says that even if the two do have sex that Angel will remain good Angel, because he needs to experience true happiness to become evil Angelus.

Keep in mind that we are searching for a murderer. Angel, Wes, and Cordelia go over the police reports and realize that the thief's gun was shooting blanks. Angel tells Rebecca that the intruder was not trying to kill her. She says she knows. She recognized the killer as one of her agent's other clients. Her agent had hired a man to stalk Rebecca to revitalize her career, but Rebecca has fired her agent for doing this. Rebecca wants to say thank you to Angel so she brings him a bottle of champagne. She puts some drugs in his glass to loosen him up and then tells him that she wants to be made a vampire. That she wants to be immortal and forever young. Angel yells at her and tells her that she should never want to be a vampire. Then he tries to explain the evilness of vampires and then he goes into his refrigerator and forces blood down her throat. Then he realizes that he has been drugged. He asks her what she did to him. She says that she just wanted him to be happy. He says, "Oh, but I am perfectly happy." Angel is now Angelus.

In the meantime, Cordelia and Wes are talking. She tells him that Rebecca had been asking freaky questions earlier about how to become a vampire. Cordelia thinks that Rebecca has gone to Angel's house to become a vampire. Cordelia and Wes rush over to Angel's and find Rebecca trying to escape from the evil Angelus. Wes asks Rebecca what drug she gave him, and she tells him that it was doximall, a drug that induces bliss. Wes tries to talk Angelus down to Angel by explaining that the bliss is only "a synthetic happiness" that will wear down as the drug leaves Angel's system. But it is too late, Angelus is crazy. Cordelia tries to threaten Angelus by claiming that she has holy water. She also says that she always knew Angel would become evil and that this is why she always carries a cross in her pocketbook and keeps a stake in her desk. (Could this be further proof that Cordelia is the next slayer?) Her plan fails, but Angelus comes to an end when he falls down an elevator hatch and passes out. He awakes the next morning and is back to normal. I just want to say that this idea of making Angel Angelus and having an actress want to be immortal was brilliant, and it was brilliantly performed.

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Well, good news, Wes. You don't have an inferiority complex. You're just inferior. --Angelus
QUOTE 2: I've been to Hell, but that was worse. --Angelus, on Cordelia's acting.
