Charles Kay Ogden

From Bentham’s Theory of Fictions, 1932 by Charles Kay Ogden

An act of will1 is said to take place “in so far as the production of the state of things which is the immediate object of the desire is considered as following immediately and certainly upon the existence of the desire ” ; and the faculty “ by which this effect is considered as produced is termed the volitional, or volitive faculty, or, in one word, the will. The volitional faculty is, therefore, a branch of the appetitive. ”

1 Those psychologists (cf. William James, Principles, Vol. Ii, p. 558) who find a difficulty with this account may be reminded that Bentham is primarily concerned with the practical or legal distinction between e.g. willful murder and manslaughter

New York, London, etc., 1932, p. lxxxiii.
