note on xenon bulbs
HID xenon headlights with independent ballasts are pretty expensive at the moment, but you can get xenon filled bulbs which are up to 30% brighter for the same wattage as standard halogens. (Not the same, but the next best thing.) Such bulbs include:
      • Narta Plus 30's
      • Philips high visibility
      • Wagner Xenon Britelight
      • Sylvania Xtravision
      • Narva Rangepower
No simple bulb solution will give you the same blue effect as HID lights. However, I use Narta Plus 30's and the glow from the light is noticeably whiter and a bit brighter or "more full". They are not coated and seem just as reliable as standard/oem. It may be wise to avoid the cheap blue coated bulbs available in auto parts places, which don't seem to have very good longevity, in my experience.

dash lights

Dash lights are a pain in the #@!% to replace once they have burnt out. To prolong the life of yours, set the lights as dimly as you can comfortably tolerate. If you like them burning brightly, just set them slightly lower than full power so that the reduction in brightness is not very noticeable: this will still reduce voltage to the bulbs and prolong lifespan considerably.

Volvospeed/Bay 13 now has detailed instructions & piccies on disassembling the dash.
