Lt. Col. Daniel D. Murphy, USA-Ret.

Lt. Col. Murphy completed the senior ROTC program while attending Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Pa., from 1966 to 1970. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he was designated a distinguished military graduate and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry branch of the U.S. Army.

He attended infantry school in 1971, completed advanced officer courses in 1978, and earned a master's degree in education in guidance and counseling from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1981. In 1982, he graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kans.

Lt. Col. Murphy's tours of duty have included company command with the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) and staff assignments from the battalion level through the corps level. He also did ROTC duty at Middle Tennessee State University and had key operational staff assignments with the 82nd Airborne Division, 2nd Infantry Division, and XVIII Airborne Corps.

During his career, Lt. Col. Murphy earned a number of awards including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Army Occupation Medal, the National Defense Ribbon (Second Award), the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Expert Infantry Badge, the Master Parachute Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Ranger Tab, and the Canadian and Honduran Parachute Badges.

Since retiring from the Army in 1995, Lt. Col. Murphy has served as the Senior Junior ROTC Army Instructor at Hillcrest High School in Springfield. Currently, he is employed as a teacher at Kickapoo High School in Springfield.

When he's not working, Lt. Col. Murphy lends his time and talent to numerous community and civic organizations including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Springfield Family YMCA. He also is active in the Missouri State High School Activities Association and is a registered football and baseball official.

Lt. Col. Murphy is married to the former Janet Rathmell of Milford, Del. The Murphys have three children: Lori, Michael, and Kathy. All reside in Springfield.

Maj. Echols served 22 years in the Air Force. He started his career in the military as a combat medic during the Vietnam era but only got as far as the Regional Air Force Hospital in Japan. After his first enlistment, he was accepted at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and immediately joined the university's only ROTC program.

A line officer for 17 years, he went from managing the SAC Missile Competition at Whiteman AFB, Neb.,to the day-to-day manager of the AWACS program at Tinker AFB, Okla. His last six years of duty were spent as a NATO officer in Italy and Germany before he retired in January 1992.

Maj. Echols currently holds a master's degree in industrial safety and has completed his classroom work for his second master's degree in industrial hygiene. For the last five years, he has worked as a consultant for health issues involving safety in the workplace and has specialized in indoor air quality for the last two years. His specialty is investigating mold health-related problems. On any given day, he may be chasing down toxic mold anywhere from Kansas City to St. Louis.
