The basics of teleprompters Why use a teleprompter? A teleprompter allows for eye contact with an audience and eliminates the need for memorizing or using cue cards. A teleprompter helps you get the shot quickly -- an important goal when working with busy executives or expensive actors. How does it work? The script is entered manually or electronically into a teleprompting program. The computer outputs a video signal of the script to a monitor or monitors. The monitor is usually positioned below the camera lens, and a one-way mirror is positioned in front of the lens, reflecting the script back to the speaker. Several lines of script are visible and a skilled operator scrolls the script at the speaker's pace. Where can it be used? A teleprompter can be used just about anywhere: in a studio, an office, even outside in bright sunlight. It can also be used in many different ways. The most common setup is on-camera, for direct eye contact into the lens, but teleprompting monitors can be mounted off-camera as well. And it doesn't matter how you are shooting -- handheld, Steadicam, tripod, jib or dolly -- Q Prompting has the teleprompter that will work for your project. What does it include? The basic package includes a laptop computer with the Telescript prompting program, a camera mount with an LCD monitor and an experienced teleprompter operator.
