Descent from Fulbert to David Pollock

Fulbert. Born c. 1080. Claimed descent from Clovis. Cock argues that he was killed in 1147, while fighting for Matilda against Stephen but he does not name the source of this statement.  His three sons were granted land in Scotland by Walter Fitz Alan, who may have been invited by the then king of Scotland in his attempts to introduce a more stable and organised political system to control the unruly clans.

It has been claimed that he was Chamberlain to William the Conqueror and that he was known as Fulbert the Saxon. There is no documentary proof of either. The former is unlikely if he was born c.1080 as William reigned in England from 1066 to 1087 and his son, William Rufus, from 1087 to 1100. The latter story may be true, but this should not be construed to indicate that he was a Saxon but is probably no more than the Scottish word Sassenach, which the Scots used and still use to describe their southern neighbours, whether they be Saxon, English or Norman.
