WHAT IS ARTHOUSE BONA

April 23, 1991

Naito-san send a letter (Oct 90) and writes, that 'the Art Center should be of public existence, not a private salon for me and my friends.' I can only agree and hope that we have your support. I will try to answer her questions and formulate how we can make our idea more public and useful.

The Idea of this Center?

The traditional Balinese artists or groups, like Pak Sija should be able to use this house as a work and rehearsal space to remember and develop performances which are about to be neglected and forgotten. They could use this international forum to relate in form of theater and related arts their specific religious philosophies and ways of living

The house could inspire young Indonesian artists to play and perform for or with our foreign artists, exchanging their experience and forms of expression in workshops, discussion or performances. These mostly very brief meetings, our guests travel with a tight schedule, should be documented on video and tape. Our guests should be allowed to take these recordings to enjoy them at home with their friends. This hopefully inspires them to come back for a longer period to seriously work.

The house could enable artists and performers from different countries to create with or without the help of Balinese artists, as one cultural unit or mixing with each other as they feel necessary. These productions could be shown abroad.

Artists could create scripts, concepts, compositions or work in the field of fine arts individually and independent. We should have enough material, such as tools, paint, paper, music instruments, masks, video and tapes and books to help our guest to start their work.. Discussions with friends who already visited this house showed that there are many other possibilities, such as seminars of artists of specific fields, collaboration with foundations abroad, in order to supply study grants for artists to visit Bali, or maybe assist Indonesian artist to visit other countries.

Who can use it?

Artists, any genre is ok, but professionals only.

  • What are the conditions?

  • Can you stay for free?

Members who have and will participate in the construction and up keeping of the Center stay for free. For others we have to find a case by case way. Generally it should be kept alive by donations or grants.

How long can you stay?

B. The condition to use this Center?

Minimum two weeks maximum two month, with a special visa six month. ...What do we want you to do?

We like you to leave some documents or reports which proves that you created something here or have learned something. If you are a performing artists try to present your work here or where you live.

 ...Do you have any obligations?

You should cook together, or prepare your own meal, clean the public space every day in turns. We will have helpers here for kitchen and garden, but it will be on village level. Respect the villagers and their tradition that is most important.

...How can you have access to the Center?

Write or Fax to the address in Bali. We still have no phone. You can as well contact the antenna in each.country to get information.

How do we select the artists?

Everybody is allowed to stay as long as we have enough room. Send your résumé. Speak to the antenna. Tell us in advance what you are planning so we can prepare. You can change your mind when you are here.

C. Location of this Center?

Take a taxi 35.000 Rps. it is the fastest and most easy. When you give us your arrival time we will pick you up.

D. Equipment of this Center

There is no hot water and all the facilities are simple. We followed the village style of life. Now in February I will start to build the walls higher, make a door to enter the land and begin the wing on the right side. On the left side we make the room. If we have enough financial help we are planning to rent two more pieces of land in Bona to allow more space between the different fields of work. Some like it quiet some need instruments or electrical facilities.

* In the village Bona

There is no pool, no restaurant, no shop. You live a real Balinese life. The nearest shopping centers: For local needs, Blabatuh and Gianyar, 5 Min, for international needs, Ubud 15 min. Denpasar, Kuta, Sanur 40 min.

You can eat in the house, in the local shops nearby or in Ubud. Ubud has a Bank, Telephon, Fax, everything you want.

We have an old car. You can rent it cheap with a driver.

So far my answers to Naito-san questions. Maybe it is enough material to think about and to respond to. I will stay here as long as I can be useful right now. If no guests come I will continue to work for theatre to be able to give financial support as well. I hope to receive response and maybe some small donation to pay the electricity and continue building. The next days we have a ceremony here, since I was gone so long. We will give a performance of classical `joget'. I hope to be able to record this event. All of you have helped a dream start, we should think to continue it as good as we can. But we can continue to function the way it is now, silent and private. But for how long? Please be well and I hope to hear from you. Better write than Fax. But you can try.
