Information about the village of Stockum-Pueschen

In 1985 the village Stockum-Pueschen celebrated it's 750th anniversary.
The part of Stockum is older than Pueschen. The first official record about Stockum was made in 1235.
Actually, the village is approximately more than 1500 years old, but there are no records before 1235, unfortunately.

During the centuries the name of the village Stockum changed pretty often: Stockheim, Stockhaen, Stockhain im Stuffel, Stacken, Stackem uff Westerwalde, Stocken, Stoeckum, Stockem and finally Stockum.

There is a hill called "The Stoeffel". Due to the moving of the outer shell of the earth's surface in this area, the bottom of the ocean was lifted 300 million years ago.
The result was the remove of the ocean. During the last million years the tectonic movements created our landscape as we can see today.
Due to the volcanic activity our hill Stoeffel was born. The Stoeffel is changing it's face until today, because the basalt industry (basalt=volcanic rock) is still scooping the hill. The basalt industy started at the end of the 19th century. This industry changed the life of the people pretty fast, because most of them have been farmers before. For sure, it was also very hard to work in the basalt quarry to earn money.
Sometimes, the men have been both, farmers and quarry workers. During the decades the technical development improved the circumstances of the jobs in the quarry.
Today there are working only a couple of employees with a very high productivity compared to the beginning. The basalt of Stockum was shipped all over Germany and also to many countries of Europe.

There is also a hill in Pueschen called "The Goetzenberg" (501 metres). The name of the village of Pueschen did also change during the centuries: Pusschen, Phußgin, Puyschen, Poyschen and finally Pueschen.

Stockum and Pueschen have been united on January 1st, 1969. Today there are living about 750 people.

The religious situation changed also during the centuries and the last decades. Most of the time the catholic's have been dominant, but today there are also lutheran people living our village. The catholic inhabitants belong to the church of Rotenhain (former Rotzenhahn). The church of Rotenhain is called St. Martin. (Church of Rotenhain)
During the centuries Stockum did also belong for a couple of years to the church of Bad Marienberg (former Marienberg). Pueschen belonged from time to time to the church of Hoehn-Schoenberg.
