Hyperinsulinism - SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of Hyperinsulinaemia are both plentiful and in some instances undefinable. The reason for this is that high insulin effects different people in different ways, it is a very powerful hormone. The most common symptom is that of excessive weight gain or obesity. Well, if you have tried all the low fat, high carbohydrate diets under the sun, and all the fitness programs you could find but to no avail there's a great chance that you might be Hyperinsulinaemic. Other major symptoms could include any of the following (get ready, this could be a long list):
  • Anxiety dreams
  • Bad moods (incl. Depression)
  • Rashes
  • Allergies (incl. Hayfever)
  • Headaches/migranes
  • Irritability
  • Achy joints/bones
  • Restless sleeping patterns
  • Diahrea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Muscle cramps
  • Food intolerances
  • Irregular/painful periods
  • Lethargy
  • Constant carbohydrate cravings
  • Fertility problems
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Brain Fog (ie, trouble remembering, trouble concentrating)
  • Suseptabiliy to illnesses
Just to mention a few.

Not every Hyperinsulinaemic suffers from all of these symptoms. I have two cousins who are also sufferers (sisters). The younger one is only 18 years old and not particularly comfortable with her overweightedness, the other does not know what body fat is. The latter suffers from unexplainable hives (rashes) and extended periods of sleep filled with anxiety dreams. Unfortunately my symptoms are of the most horrid, annoying kind and in plentiful - hey, they were annoying enough to stimulate the emergence of this page!!

I cannot stress enough, for some sufferers Hyperinsulinaemia will effect every waking moment. Most people would ignore one or two of these problems when isolated but, as I have outlined in my opening statement on the matter, many of the symptoms together can make life very uncomfortable.
(I know better than anyone... ever been called 'Hypocondriac'? 'Moaner'? 'Whinger'? Attention seeker? - ok, perhaps that last one is deserved ;) )

Looking back into the family circle, as I think I said before, Insulin Resistance can be GENETIC! (nB. not always the case - see 'How to find out if you are..') And what is worse is that it is recessive, ie, males can only be carriers - unless they damage their insulin sensitive cells through bad eating (again see 'How to find out if you are..'). In my particular family there are 3 confirmed 'Hyperinsulinaemics' and just newly discovered a Diabetic (of the 'Diabeties Type II' kind). The rest are still sceptics. (..no one likes to think that their family is the carrier of a genetic disorder..)

Now I feel like I'm creating a pick a path murder mystery novel?? ..perhaps I'm just showing my age..

In the near future I will be outlining my person experiences with Hyperinsulinaemia.. - nothing too heavy (I hope) but detailing the before and after. Also included, the little tips I've picked up along the way...
