The City...
Bell
Inn 3 Broyle Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4AT
Tel: 01243 783388 Theatre types hang out after the theatre.
Bull
Inn
4-5 Market Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1JW
Tel: 01243 785301 A bit on the dull side, to put it politely.
Bush
16 The Hornet, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4JG
Tel: 01243 782939 Chichester's one and only gay bar, for anyone of that
bent. Friendly enough place, landlady chatty and plays some good music
- especially slammin' on a Wednesday night. What was the Chequers "B"
pool team is now based here on a Tuesday night. Gales ales which some
may find a little sickly.
Chequers
Inn 203 Oving Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4ER
Tel: 01243 786427 Not as good as it used to be.
Chichester
38 West St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1RP
Tel: 01243 783185 Nowadays not a bad place to go for some respite from
the overcrowded Slurpy Toad. Sometimes has bands or a "disco"
in the back bar which may not be fantastic but at least it's live entertainment,
something severely lacking in this city.
Coach
& Horses
125b St. Pancras, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4LH
Tel: 01243 782313 Skulking Loafers cricket team based here. Despite being
in a fairly central location still has a "local pub" feel about
it. Generally "old blokes" pub. Music poor. Ales good. Under
new management from 8th January 2001.Due in no way to the new land (Colin McAndrew)the ales now on sale are brewed by Hall & Woodhouse not everyones cup of tea.
Crown
Whyke Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 2HT
Tel: 01243 785009 Locals pub, no reason to make the effort to go there
unless you live within a couple of minute's walk!
Dolphin
& Anchor
West Street, Chichester, West Sussex Previously part of the Dolphin &
Anchor Hotel, now a Witherspoons
pub so if you've been in one before you know exactly what to expect! Dull
and "themed", no music but food is OK if you time it right and
get the "two for one" deal, otherwise it's overpriced "pub
grub". Beer is a reasonable price for Chichester, small range of
real ales. Can take a long time to get served when busy at weekends due
to seemingly understaffed bar.
Eastgate
Inn 4 The Hornet, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4JG
Tel: 01243 774877 What used to be one of the truly GREAT pubs in town,
talked about by everyone, is now just another humdrum place. Has a pool
table. Gales ales which some may find a little sickly. Those who used
to drink there many years ago will be saddened to learn that Maisie passed
away May 1999.
Fountain
29 Southgate, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1ES
Tel: 01243 781352 Pleasant enough little watering hole. Has a "Blockbusters"
quiz on Thursday nights and a couple of good real ales. Bands or some
kind of entertainment on a Tuesday nights.
Four
Chesnuts
Oving Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4EQ
Tel: 01243 779974 Much better than it used to be but still gets very smokey.
One of the few pubs in the area, if not the only one, to publish a regular
newsletter. Live music Saturday evenings.
George
& Dragon
51 North St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1NQ
Tel: 01243 785660 Back to being just another bog standard "locals"
pub according to information kindly supplied by Margot & Nigel Lowe.
Hogs Head 50 South St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1DS
Tel: 01243 785753 Young people's bar on the whole so usually lively and
busy. Good place also for lunch and as a watering hole on a thirsty shopping
trip! Good ales, wide eclectic selection.
Hole
In The Wall St.
Martins St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1NP
Tel: 01243 782555 Young people's bar on the whole so usually lively and
busy. Good place as a watering hole on a thirsty shopping trip or as part
of a pub crawl! Fair selection of real ale but mainly a lager drinkers
emporium.
Hope
Inn Spitalfield
Lane, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1BN
Tel: 01243 783524 OK place but a bit out of the way from the town centre. Very popular with the local students
Mainline
Tavern
35 Whyke Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 2HW
Tel: 01243 782238 The landlord writes: "Check it out mate! We have
been here for 5 years and it's not a rough pub. Quiz night, karaoke twice
a week. We have 5 darts teams, 2 pool teams, 2 football teams and our
main meals are all £2.99! We have won 'Chichester In Bloom' twice
and been runners up 3 times".
Mitre
Oliver Whitby Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 3LB
Tel: 01243 785942 Does a great pint of Flowers, Blockbuster quiz Thursday,
good selection on the jukebox, regular events (karaoke, discos, etc).
Diana (the landlady) and the rest of the bar staff are all very friendly
and make you feel at home.
(Thanks to Winz for the write-up).
Nags
Head
St Pancras, Chichester, West Sussex
Tel: 01243 ?????? A place to go for a quiet get-together with
friends. Does an expensive carvery for about 8 quid. Music generally so-so
but better than a lot of places. "Went to the Nags last night good selection of real ales the
Youngs Special was Special. A football match was on the tele but did not affect the atmosphere
which was laid back and welcoming".Thanks Jodi Vadbacs for the report.
Old
Cross North Street, Chichester, West Sussex
Tel: 01243 785029 Serves great food all day (all cooked on the premises)
and has a really good atmosphere, and great bar staff!!! (According to
an anonomous email). Seems a bit pricey but comfortably spacious - good
meeting place or as part of a pub crawl.
Park
Tavern 11
Priory Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1NS
Tel: 01243 785057 Bizarrely, for a town centre pub, closes afternoons
even at the weekend. Serves good food however. Check out the blackboard
for daily specials. Friendly landlord, landlady and bar staff. Bit of
an old fashioned, fogey feel about it but OK at lunch times. In need of
some inspiration to liven it up in the evenings. Gales ales which some
may find a little sickly.
Rainbow
Tavern
56, St. Pauls Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 3BW
Tel: 01243 785867 Rennovated and re-opened last year - main drinking area
a lot more spacious but still a tight squeeze to get past the bar. Landlord
and landlady seem friendly enough, as do the bar staff and locals.
Richmond
Arms
9 Stockbridge Road, Chichester, West Sussex
Tel: 01243 536995
CURRENTLY BEING RENNOVATED AND HAS A NEW NAME.
Royal
Arms
92 East St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1HA
Tel: 01243 782148 Better known as "The Punch House" after its
main bar called, er, "The Punch House Bar". Favoured by squaddies.
Smokey, dingey, violent. Some people love it, others hate it. Occasionally
has bands, usual old-hat blues fayre though.
Ship
Hotel North
St, Chichester, West Sussex Looks a bit posh, very dull and dated for
just having a drink but has a function room for parties, receptions etc.
Slurping
Toad
West Street, Chichester, West Sussex
Tel: 01243 ?????? Opened October 98 in what was previously an indoor market.
Gets busy most nights, expect to queue weekend evenings. Spacious and
airy with a predominantly young crowd. Music generally OK but not very
varied, better on nights when a DJ spins the chewns. Good food served
until 5pm weekdays, 3pm Sundays. Tasteless plastic frog/toad theme. Has
lost its initial lively and exciting ambience, needs something to liven
it up again. Loud, yobby football crowd frequent at weekends which may
put some people off.
Swan
12 Westgate, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 3EU
Tel: 01243 539336 Quite recently rennovated, looks nice, dunno what it's
like inside.
White
Horse
South St, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1EE
Tel: 01243 785804 Young people's bar so usually lively and busy. Good
place as part of a pub crawl. Mainly a lager drinkers emporium, also a
pizza place. Bangin' chewns and a queue to get in at the weekends.
Wickham
Arms
102 Bognor Rd, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 2NW
Tel: 01243 784782 Irish bar so does a good Guinness complete with shamrock!
Also Gales ales of which the Best tastes OK surprisingly. Bit of an old
codgers bar and the music is a bit, well, Irish ballady I suppose you
could call it.

in the water when the tide comes in.
Anchor
Inn Selsey Rd, Sidlesham, Chichester, West Sussex PO20 7QU Tel: 01243
641373 Mainly a locals' pub. Why not pop in for a chat with Dave and his
dad, sitting in their regular places up at the bar? Picks up a bit of
passing trade in the summer, being on the main drag to the holiday hotspot
of Selsey Bill.
Anglesey
Arms Halnaker, Chichester, West Sussex PO18 0NQ Tel: 01243 773474
Bader
Arms Malcom Rd, Tangmere, Chichester, West Sussex PO20 6HS Tel: 01243
779422 Named after famous WW2 airman Douglas Bader. In fact many years
ago, soon after the place was opened, the man himself ticked off the landlord
for banning bikers. What a good egg.

Dell Quay, Apuldram, Chichester, West Sussex Wonderful setting by the
water near the top of Chichester Harbour. Great place to watch the sunset
at any time of year from the bar or the spacious garden. Gets very crowded
early evenings at weekends and holidays. Good ale, overpriced food.
<Earl
of March Lavant Rd, Mid Lavant, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 4RD Tel:
01243 774751 Friendly atmosphere, well kept real ales at good prices.
Good value for money food. Live bands on Thursday evenings. It is with regret I have to announce
that this pub no longer remains. A sad loss to all who like real ale

Well done Mike and Michelle Camra West Sussex Pub of the year 2005
My personal favourite for a good drink of real ale at
a very good price . Landlord Mike Martell has made this pub into one of the nicest and friendliest pubs in the area . Summer Lightening is priced at just £2.20p per pint .
Sunday afternoons are very lively with a lot of the locals attending and roast spuds for free. Well worth a visit if you like the country pub as it should be.
Special guest appearances have been very popular of recent,Basin Mills the fireman a very hard act to follow.

I recommend the above pub/restaurant .
"
Went in this pub last week on the off chance and found there are new owners,
and a complete re-fit is apparently under way. Had a good chat with the
new owner who seems to have some great ideas which he seems to think will
be completed within weeks. Got a chance to sample the food on the house,
and I have to say it was awesome. I think this place will turn into a
high class restaurant come pub, I would highly recommend it." Many
thanks to David
Evans for this review.

A good drinking hole with a fair range of beers at reasonable prices.
Food is served lunch times (evenings summer time) and is good plain home
cooked at very good prices. There is a well stocked juke box to cater
for most tastes and a live band most Saturday nights - mostly blues, Irish
folk (jiggy stuff), 70's - 80's pop. Busy weekends. NO DOOR STAFF. If
you are in the area give it a go! (thanks to Paul Seabrook)

not just the norm. Some very good specials".
