As noted earlier, Bernard and Annie had 13 children. Table 6 summarizes their vital statistics. William (Bill) was born in 1880, and the last child, Dorothy, was born in 1903, and after four infant deaths, the remaining nine were still living at home. They all continued to live at home until they were married.

Supplementary information to that given in Table 6 follows:

William John (Bill)
Bill was born in 1880 and started working in his father's butcher stores in 1898. By 1910 he was manager of the By-Ward stores. During the declining year of the Slattery business it was reorganized as B. Slattery Ltd. with only the By-Ward store operating as both wholesale and retail. Bill was Secretary-Treasurer and Manager of Operations. He retired about 1935.

Although the oldest of Bernard and Annie's family, three of his younger brothers were married before him. Bill lived at home with his parents in the family home at 40 Riverdale until he and Teresa Bruder were married at the Ottawa College chapel (part of St. Joseph's church) in July 1924. He was then 44. After a brief period in a Friel St. apartment, Bill and Teresa moved into #68 Riverdale, which had been rented out until then. Bill died in 1949 at 69, and his wife Teresa in 1962. They had no children.

John J. (Jack)
The second son, Jack, was born in 1882, and at age 18 started to work for his father, as had Bill two years before. In 1904, when he was only 22, Jack married Katie Rioux. According to the city directory, in 1910 he was manager of the Windsor Market Branch on Nicholas St, and in 1915 the Sparks St. shop. However, I have been informed that he had a senior position with the Brewer's Retail stores and did not take and active part in the family business until after the reorganization in the 1930's. Jack became President of B. Slattery Ltd. to at least 1945. In that year, he was President, his wife Katie was Treasurer, F.H. Plant was Vice-president and J. York was Secretary.

After their marriage, Jack and Katie moved into the family home for a few years, and then to #66 Riverdale, where they lived until Jack's death in 1948 at age 66. They had no children. Katie died in 1958.

Edward Thomas (Eddie)
Eddie was born in 1884 and was listed in the family business in 1904. He probably started when he was 18, like his brothers Bill and Jack. In 1910 he was manager of one of the expansion shops, at 655 Somerset. I have no further information on his career from 1910.

Eddie lived in the family home until 1927 when he married Catherine Florence delta Rode. He was then 44. She was considerably younger. They had two children, Elizabeth Anne, born 1929, and William Edward (Billy Ed) born in 1932. They lived briefly in an apartment on Lewis St. and then to the family home until Annie's death. They were divorced in the 1940's. eddie died in 1964 at 80 years of age. His former wife remarried and lived in the United states until her death in 1992.

Bernard P. (Bun)
Bun was born in 1887. He worked also in the family business. After the reorganization he was Vice President of B. Slattery Ltd. until at least 1940. He studied Engineering at the University of Toronto. He managed his father's estate and was responsible for dividing and selling the properties.

Bun married twice. His first marriage was in 1918 to Irene Brendan. They had a daughter, Florence Hildegarde, born in 1919. (Florence has been helpful to me in supplying information about all the family). They lived first at 33 Cooper St., but in 1925 they were in #64 Riverdale. Irene died in 1943, and Bun married again, to Rose Berlinguette in 1955. Rose died in 1964 and Bun in 1967 at 80 years of age.

Charles James was born in April 1888 and died in September of that year.

Francis Patrick was born in March 1890 and died in August. The similarities in the short lives of these two boys is surely related to the epidemics which took so many lived in the Slattery family, as well as in the whole Ottawa area.

J. Gladstone (Gladdy)
After the short lives of Charles and Francis, it must have been a happy occasion when a healthy boy, "Gladdy", was born in 1891. As with his older brothers he started in the family business at 18, and 1910 was working in the Bank Street shop as a cashier. In 1920 he was working in the By-Ward shops, and then managed one of his father's stores, on Laurier Ave. E. He left the company to start his own shop in the Market. Unfortunately it was not a success, and he went bankrupt and lost his investment.

Gladdy married Ida Mary Moore in 1915. He was 24 and she 21. In 1920 they were living in a house at 146 Marlborough Street. They had two children, James Gladstone, born in 1918 who died in infancy, and Lorna Audrey born in 1922. Gladdy built a house at 94 Riverdale after his father's death. He died in 1952, and after his death Ida Mary moved to Toronto near the home of her daughter Lorna.

Irene
After seven boys, it must have been a cause of great celebration when a girl finally came on the scene. Irene was born in 1893. In 1921 she married Norman Hodgins. Irene's father, Bernard, built them a house at 100 Riverdale in the style of Andrew Lloyd Wright. They had a son, Warren Joseph, born in 1924, and a daughter, Mary Adele, born in 1932. They moved to Toronto in 1940. Irene died in 1943 and Norman in 1963.

Florence
Florence was born in 1894, but sadly lived only until 1906, when she died at 12 years of age, at the Gloucester St. Convent where she was a boarder.

Audrey was born in July 1896 but died in August.

Eveline was born and died in October 1897. She was the fourth and last of the infant deaths in the family of Bernard and Annie, in 1888, 1890, 1896 and 1897.

Hilda Marjory
Marjory was born in 1898, and in 1925 at age 27, she married Gerald Wall. Their only child was a daughter, Joan Ann, born in 1927. Joan has been most helpful in providing information and photographs for this book.

Marion Dorothy
Dorothy was born in 1903, the last of the children. In 1926,age 23, she married Frank J. Nighbor. They had one child, a son, whom they named Bernard Francis Stanley (cf. Stanley Cup!). Dorothy died in 1931 form TB. Frank settled in Pembroke.
