Mansha
Yad is a prominent fiction writer and playwright of Pakistan. He was born
in September 1937 in a village of district Shiakhupura of Punjab,
Pakistan. He did diploma in Civil Engineering in 1957. Later on he
obtained Masters in Urdu and Masters in Punjabi from Punjab
University Lahore. Inspired by the folk stories and tales, which he
heard and read in his childhood, he started writing at an early age.
His first story was published in 1955 but it was in 1970s that his
characteristic style matured and emerged as his identity. His first
collection of short stories 'Band Muthi Main Jugnu' (Firefly in the Fist)
was published in 1975 followed by Mass Aur Mitti (Flesh and Clay) in 1980.
These two publication lead to consolidating his reputation as one of the
leading contemporary writer of short story in Urdu as well as in Punjabi.
He has published eight books of short stories
including one in Punjabi. In addition he is author of a Punjabi
novel 'Tanwan Tanwan Tara (Sparsely A Star), published in 1997. Three
anthologies in Urdu and two in English have also been published. Mansha
Yad has also written plays for Radio
Pakistan and
Pakistan TV. Both of his Punjabi publications were awarded Waris Shah
Adabi Awards by Pakistan Academy of Letters. His several stories have been
translated in many other languages of the world.
Mansha Yad is an Engineer by occupation and worked in Capital
Development Authority, Islamabad from 1960-1997. He founded Halqa-e Arbab-e-
Zauq Islamabad (Circle of literary fellows ) , a well- known
National literary Forum, in 1972. After his retirement he is
fully devoted to his work of writing. Presently besides writing short
stories for literary magazines and plays for PTV he is working on his
first Urdu novel
