Patterns for Learning Chinese

introduction

These pages are a collection of study materials I've developed, as well as essays and other thoughts and musings that I've recorded along my quest to conquer the Chinese language.  I later realized that there is a common thread that runs through all the content, and that is the emphasis on patterns.  Patterns are repeating features of spoken and written language, which we can relate to previous knowledge and experiences.  Patterns of course exist in every language, but they are a particularly useful concept with Chinese, with its overwhelming amount of visual as well as semantic information.  Patterns are all about finding connections in order to reduce complexity.

word lists

I've found that creating word lists is a vey effective way to assimilate vocabulary, especially if each list has a specific theme.  These lists can be browsed or downloaded as they are, but they're also a good fit for flashcards,  and I'm working on distributions so that you'll be able to import them into your favorite flashcard program.
