This is a ranting page on gay
rights, on being queer, and on the things that pop into my head that may be
related.
Gay Marriage

I've been watching the Massachusetts gay
marriage debate. Here's why I'm a bit scared
now.
I had to write a paper for English 101
about gay marriage. Here it is.
Gay Marriage
Here's some of me just ranting.
Hertzi and I have been together for three
years the way we count it, yet we are not allowed to marry. Why is that?
Well, DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, states that a marriage can only be the
union of a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation. Other people
also say that marriage is for procreation, and that gays are aberrations and
abominations. So we don't get the benefits of marriage. We don't get
little things, like the ability to visit each other when one of us is
hospitalized with a serious illness. The right to inherit property from
each other. How about the right to claim one and other on insurance
policies from work (many business places offer domestic partnership insurance,
but it still doesn't recognize us as spouses).
I watch the message boards on Yahoo a lot
and most of the trolls there make the claim that "gay people" are trying to get
special rights. Bull.
Here's a question that needs to be
answered: is marriage a legal contract or a spiritual sacrament? Who gets
jurisdiction, the church or the state? Now, usually the church would be
screaming trying to claim it, but I don't see this happening now. Why?
Is it because more and more churches are becoming willing to perform commitment
ceremonies?

Well, now two Canadian providences have
legalized gay marriage, Belgium also has, and the UK is seriously looking in
that direction. Massachusetts is set to vote on legalizing gay marriage,
and the Boston Globe published an editorial in favor of gay marriage.
Let's see where this goes.
