The war ended on 18th day. Bheem had also fulfilled his vow  by breaking Duryodhan's thigh and leaving him to die pathetically. All Paandav and Krishn were a bit relieved in the camp on that night.

Duryodhan was lying alone counting his moments to die. The then Ashwatthaamaa came there looking for him, and asked - "Friend I had searched you everywhere, I didn't find you anywhere. What is this condition you are lying in here? Who has put you in this condition?" Duryodhan told him everything. Ashwatthaamaa said - "Friend, What can I do for you at this moment? I can do anything, just tell me." Duryodhan said - "Friend, If you can bring, I need all Paandav's heads." Ashwatthaamaa said - "I will. Just wait, don't go away." And he just returned as he came.

He went to Paandav's camp. First he killed Dhristdyumn, then looked for Paandav's tent. After a while he found a tent in which 5 people were sleeping. He made sure that they were Paandav and cut off those all five people's necks. He immediately came back to Duryodhan to give this good news to him that he had fulfilled his promise, but unfortunately he had already passed away. Ashwatthaamaa cried for him.

When the morning broke, there was lot of noise that somebody had killed Paandav's five sons while sleeping, in the night. Ashwatthaamaa understood that he had made a mistake. They were not Paandav but they were their sons. (Draupadee's five sons looked like five Paandav, that is why Ashwatthaamaa made this mistake). Now he got very afraid and ran for his life.

Draupadee was extremely sad and was crying for her children. Arjun consoled her and assured her that this was the work of Ashwatthaamaa and he would bring him from any corner of the world and make him fall in the feet of Draupadee. Then she can punish him as she wished.

So Arjun and Krishn came out of the camp and soon found him running away. They followed him to the end of the world. When Ashwatthaamaa got tired running, he took shelter in a Muni's Aashram. Arjun also came there and a great fight took place. Now Ashwatthaamaa got tired of fight also so he decided to use Brahm Astra. But there was one thing, that he knew how to use it but he did not know how to call it back.

As Ashwatthaamaa released Brahm Astra, with the advice of Krishn, Arjun also released Brahm Astra. Later on Brahmaa Jee's request Arjun called his Astra back, but Ashwatthaamaa could not do that. Then he directed his Astra towards Uttaraa's womb where Pareekshit (the last male child of Paandav family) was growing. In fact Ashwatthaamaa wanted to destroy the whole Paandav Vansh.

Ashwatthaamaa got defeated. Arjun wanted to kill him, Krishn said "You cannot kill him, he is immortal, but if you take his forehead's gem then also it is like death for a Braahman. So Arjun took out his gem from his forehead. Arjun brought him to Draupadee tying with his chariot. Draupadee freed him saying that one: he was Guru's son, two: her children will not come back after killing him, three: she doesn't want Brahm Hatyaa Paap.
