9. The Yoga Of Kingly Secret

Sri Bhagavan said:

To You who are devoid of the carping Spirit, I shall communicate knowledge of God combined with most profound secret of knowledge by knowing which you will be freed from evil.

9-1

This is sovereign knowledge, sovereign secret, hallowed and excellent, the means by which God is realized the means of knowing dharma, - easy to achieve and everlasting.

9-2

O slayer of foes, men who have no faith in the knowledge relating to Dharma -this supporter, the Lord -do not come to Me, but only return to the path of Samsara.

9-3

The whole world is pervaded by me of unmanifest form. All beings are supported by Me but I do not support myself on any of them.

9-4

The beings are not resting on me. Behold my supreme power, myself who is the creator, am the supporter for all beings, I do not seek support in them.

9-5

Just as the mighty air exists in space around moving everywhere, know that all beings abide in me, similarly.

9-6

O Kunti's son, during dissolution all beings enter into Prakrti that is mine and who is under my control, consisting of satva, rajas and tamasic qualities, and at the beginning of every creation, I bring them into being again.

9-7

Taking hold on my Prakrt which is subject to my control and which is composed of satva, rajas and tamasic qualities. I bring into being which are under the power of Prakrti who is in turn under my control.

9-8

Those actions of creations do not bind me, O Dhananjaya, as I remain indifferent as it were and unattached to these actions.

9-9

Under my direct supervision, prakrti produces the moving and unmoving creation; because of this, O Kunti's son, the world becomes caught up in the whirl of creation.

9-10

The ignorant disregard me as one possessing a human body, not knowing my supreme eternal and perfect nature.

9-11

They are baffled in there hope; their sacrificial and other acts are in vain, their knowledge serves no purpose and they are devoid of sense of judgement and fall under the influence of demons and devils deceptive by nature.

9-12

But, O Partha, the Mahatmas who possess the qualities of those who are eligible for liberation know me as the cause of all beings worship me with undistracted mind.

9-13

Always glorifying me, firmly exerting themselves, steadfast in vows, bowing to me with devotion, they worship me always setting their mind on me.

9-14

Others, however, worship me with Jnanayajna and meditate on me as one who is the same in every being yet, differing from all the world, and at the same time many fold, in these forms, supreme and present anywhere.

9-15

I am the ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering made to forefathers, I am the medicinal herb, the sacred syllable, the butter, the sacred fire and the offerings in to the fire.

9-16

I am the father of this world, the mother, the supporter, the person to be revered, the one to be known, the holy one, the sacred syllable (OM) and also the Rig, Sama and Yajur Vedas.

9-17

I am the goal, the Lord, Master Eternal witness, Abode, Refuge, Friend, Origin and Dissolution, foundation, receptacle and the Imperishable seed.

9-18

O Arjuna, I give heat to the World, with-hold and send forth rains, I am Immortality and also death manifest and unmanifest, perfect and second to none.

9-19

The Knowers of the three Vedas who contented with their superficial meaning drink the Soma juice, are released from sin and worship with sacrifices. They pray to me for the attainment of Svarga and ascending to the holy world of Indra, the ruler of Gods enjoy the celestial, pleasures in Heave.

9-20

But having enjoyed the extensive heavenly world, they return to this world of mortals when the stock of their good deeds becomes exhausted. Thus following the same path of deities enjoined by the three Vedas and seeking worldly enjoyment, they are caught up by the see-saw of rise to heaven and fall to earth.

9-21

But on those devotees who worship me, thinking of none else, who have devoted their mind to me and are ever preserving in my service and in contemplating on me, I confer that permanent heavenly abode from which there is no return to mundane life.

9-22

O Kunti's Son, even the devotees of other gods, who worship them with faith and finally offer the deeds to me, worship me alone ultimately, though not in the way prescribed in the sastras.

9-23

I am indeed the enjoyer of all sacrifices and their sole Lord but the Traividyas do not truly know me, and therefore, they fall down to earth from heaven.

9-24

Those who take to the worship of gods go to the gods, the worshippers of Pitrs go to them, those that worship the Bhutas go to the Bhutas, likewise, my worshippers come on to me.

9-25

That which is offered to me with devotion be it a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, that devout offering by him who is unattached to objects and is thus devoted to me, I do accept.

9-26

O Kunti's Son, whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer into the fire, whatever you give, what austerities you practice dedicate the same as an offering to me.

9-27

By doing thus, you will be freed from the bonds of Karma which yields both good and evil fruits. Having renounced the fruits of duties as enjoined, you will become free and come to me.

9-28

Equally impartial am I to all beings. But they that worship me with devotion are under my grace and I favor them in proportion to their devotion to me.

9-29

Even though a true devotee should perform improper act (sometimes), if he worships me with devotion, he should be regarded as righteous for he has in him a correct, single minded and true knowledge of me.

9-30

O Kunti's Son, that person who, though well with devotion doing improper acts knows me, quickly becomes a righteous soul and attains eternal peace. Know it for certain that my devotees never perishes - So invaluable is devotion to me.

9-31

O Partha, even those who out of sinful acts have been born in inferior lives as women, Vaisyas and Sudras and are yet devoted to me, attain the highest goal.

9-32

How much more then, the holy Brahmins and devoted loyal saints? Having been born in this joyless and evanescent world, do worship me.

9-33

Fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, offer your sacrifice to me, and prostate yourself before me. Concentrating your mind thus on me, and regarding me your supreme goal, you will come to me.

9-34

Thus ends the ninth chapter of the Upanishads of the Bhagavad Gita entitled "The Yoga of Kingly Secret".
