GIF stands for graphics interchange format. It's a highly compressed graphics format that lets you download and view graphics very quickly.
For a person interested only in using GIF's, animating them, and displaying them on your
own page, you need never know anything about all the tech stuff that makes them tick. For
instance, I use Front Page '97, Photoimpact, Microsoft Image Composer, Microsoft GIF
Animator, and a few others for these pages and the software handles all the technical
stuff for me. Almost all of these, and any other good ones, will take any format picture
and convert it to a GIF. You could for instance, draw your own GIF as a bitmap in windows
paint, load it into most any graphic software or web authoring software, and it will
change the format to a web friendly GIF. It is really one part of this type of work that
is a no brainer. The real work should be the creation, not how the canvas is made.
