from "Knox Country History and Families" ed. Charles Reed Mitchell ~~~~~ Dr. Will Jones graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1909. Be began his practice in Gray in 1910. In those days Gray was a mining town where people traveled by horse or horse and buggy. He started his medical career with 50 cents in the pocket and an old gray mare, used for transportation. Many patients would show up with pigs, guns, hens, vegetables and "what-nots" because they had no money. Before becoming a doctor, he had been an elementary school teacher who taught eight grades in a one room school. |
by Glenn E. Perry ~~~~~ Dr. Will Jones practiced in the little hamlet of Gray, between Barbourville and Corbin. He was my mother's doctor in about 1947. I remember that Dr. Jones looked EXACTLY like Harry Truman. . Of course, that was a long time ago, and you shouldn't trust what somebody remembers when he was six years old, but I remember my mother telling the story that he went to some city and people were screaming on the streets: "There he is!" |

held statewide political office for over 20 years. In 1962, she was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives from Knox Co, KY. She was the first woman and first Democrat ever to represent that county. In 1972, she was elected Clerk of the Kentucky Court of Appeals (now Kentucky Supreme Court). She was elected Kentucky State Treasurer in 1976, elected to be Kentucky Secretary of State in 1980, and re-elected to be State Treasurer in 1984 and 1992. |
elected to, she was the Democratic nominee for Congress in 1954. In this heavily Republican 5th district -- "Even though she ran against a widely-respected incumbent, Dr. Tim Lee Carter, she won more votes than any Democratic candidate who had ever run for that office, and narrowly lost the race." |
It is the opinion of some researchers that the Isaac Jones who married Sarah Basham is the son of William &Elizabeth(Smith) Jones, while other's believe that this Isaac is the son of William's brother & wife, Isaac &Rhoda(Smith) Jones For the List of Descendants of Isaac & Sarah(Basham) Jones, CLICK HERE |
