Memories ~ Page 3

We lived in Florida for about 3 years
and of course while we were there,
we welcomed our first darling baby girl on
April 18, 1944.

When I finished my time in the service
we returned to St. Charles. Our families
were so excited about us coming back with our
new little girl.

Once we got back, we lived with my parents
for a short time until we could find
a place of our own. It wasn't long
before I found the perfect place!
My Dad helped us and we bought our first home!!

The next year in November, 1946,
our family grew bigger, and we welcomed
our second little girl, Tina.
Just in time for Christmas!!

The following year, we were waiting for the arrival of TWINS!!
What a surprise!
In February 1948, our twins were born.
Twin boys, we named them Leslie Jr. and Larry.
We lost little Larry at birth.
I think nowadays, he probably could have been saved.
He was born with the cord around his neck.
They said they tried everything to save him
but they couldn't.

Una was sad that we had lost little Larry,
but also very happy that God left us Leslie Jr.
I made all the funeral arrangements for Larry
while Una was still in the hospital.
I had never seen such a tiny little casket.
He looked just like a tiny little sleeping angel.

We were just so happy to have our three little ones
But I know there was always an empty spot in Una's heart
for little Larry.

Every Mother's Day I would give her roses.
One red rose for each of our children,
and one white rose for little Larry.
We always thought of him as the one little
soldier in heaven to watch over his sisters and brother!

I was working with my Dad and Una stayed home with
the children. She wrote songs for each one of them.
She loved to write stories and play the piano.
She kept the piano that she had as a young girl.
The same one we used to sit at while she played
and we sang. Now she did it with the kids.
They loved it!
I know they kept her busy!

They grew so quickly, soon they were all in school.
We put Annette in the Convent
where Una Marie had gone to school.
Once Tina started school, we decided it would
be better if we put them in a school where they
could all be together.
We put them all in the Catholic school.
(Couldn't send a boy to the Convent!! haha)

Time passed and we were outgrowing out first home.
I had just finished building a house on the west
side of town and I took the family out to see it.
Una took one look at it and said, "We are moving!
I told her I was going to sell that house.
She said, "No, we are going to live here!"
Then she smiled her sweet smile at me,
and I just melted.
She had her ways!! And I just loved it! haha

What she hadn't told me was that we were
going to need the extra space, because our family
was about to grow again!!

Una is going to have another baby!!

We were going to have another baby in August 1952.
and were very excited about it.

Shortly after we got the news,
my Mother Westermeier died.
It was May 1952, just a few months before the baby was due.
She had committed suicide and we were just devastated.

She had been having some medical problems
for a few years before this
but nobody ever thought she would do something to end her life.

It is the most haunting thing to deal with.
So many thoughts go through your mind.
You wonder if there was something you might
have done to prevent it or
something you might have not seen,
maybe some kind of warning signs.
Something you overlooked.

Maybe you were too busy with your own life,
something, somehow... to explain the horrible loss
and feelings of guilt and so many other feelings
that haunt you.
It is almost impossible to describe.
She had given so much of herself and I felt
in some way maybe I had let her down.
I could hardly deal with it....
