Iron Ghost issue 1 by Chuck Dixon and Sergio Cariello, Image Comics

Chuck Dixon writes a lot of comics. He has written for Marvel, DC, and CrossGen, so when I saw his name on this book, I figured I would try it out. It seems to be a six-issue series, based around a masked vigilante in Berlin in 1945 near the end of the war in Europe. In this issue, we see the vigilante perform two hits on SS personnel, one being a solo job, and the other time our masked friend torches a beer garden to kill a bunch of the soldiers.

Interestingly enough, there are a couple of police detectives who are out to get the guy. I mean, the German high command can't let people get away with murdering SS officers, can they? A few other characters are introduce as well, including a billionaire arms manufacturer and a copule German war heroes. I can't tell at this point how they will play into the story, or exactly where this is all going, but the first issue was interesting enough that I plan on sticking around for a little while to see where things end up.

Iron Ghost issue 6, by Chuck Dixon and Sergio Cariello, 2006, Image Comics

And another limited series comes to an end. Iron Ghost, a story about an assassin killing Nazi party members in 1945 Berlin, started out brilliantly. There were action scenes, sure, but it was more of a real mystery as opposed to a straight up action story. These German investigators were trying to unravel the mystery while Berlin was literally bombed to pieces around them. The Iron Ghost was able to stay one step ahead of them, though, up until issue 5, in which the killer is unmasked on the last page. Now that the killer's identity is known, issue 6 is left to wrap things up.

I must admit, I didn't care for issue 6 very much. I think the reason for that is that I had really liked the mystery aspect of the story, and once the killer was unmasked and the mystery was gone, the book turned into a pure action story, which wasn't what I had been looking for with this title. Yes, there is poetic justice, with the bad people getting theirs in the end, but the thing that made this story different was gone. This issue is also shorter than the others. Not the note I wanted the series to end on.
