For me it all started with the stories my Nana would tell me
about her parents, especially
the stories that she repeated
that she had heard from her father. He had come over here from Ireland.
And I of course was fascinated by the foods that he had remembered
and passed on as
family traditon. From there
I wanted to make them like my great great grandmother
would have, or as close as possible...not having any peat available.;)
From there it moved onto camping, and not being able to afford
all the modern "necessities"
I started learning alot of things
about outdoor cooking with an open fire. And found
that
there really isn't much that can't be cooked that way.
And thus one thing leads to another...
Coming soon....please be patient....
some herbal remedies that I find more helpful
then any modern made remedies,
info on weaving,and
several other subjects I find of interest....
Some ideas of plants/info that can be used for natural dyes
Pale Red: Fresh beets or cranberries, frozen raspberries
Orange: Yellow onion skins
Light yellow: Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
Yellow: Ground turmeric
Pale green: Spinach leaves
Blue: Canned blueberries or red cabbage leaves
Beige to brown: Strong brewed coffee
Boil the plant material until you have
a good rich color.
Strain the dye,
discard the plant material, return the dye to
the pot.
These dyes can easily be used for
Easter eggs and many can be used for dying fabrics/yarns etc. also.
Although they may not have a great color
fastness when used on fabrics/yarns
