Red-breasted Sapsucker

Common in the mixed forests and tree stands in breeding season, they move to suburban open woods in winter.  It has a bright chest, head and going around tree trunks to dig numerous, small holes which often line up in hundreds. The holes produce saps to which they come back to feed on later.  They make “shripp” calls.
