Douglas Squirrel

Although not a bird, the Douglas Squirrel is included in here because its calls sometimes confuse people who think it is some unknown bird.  Douglas Squirrels used to be abundant in our region until around 1990.  Then the Grey Squirrel, which was introduced here from the East in the 1950s, started to take over the Douglas Squirrel’s territory.  Fortunately, we still have some Douglas Squirrels in secluded suburban forests and the wilderness where Grey Squirrels don’t venture.
