The Sponsored Youth Programme of the
Kiwanis Club of Spanish was conceived in November 1977 when Sister Paschal,
the Principal of St. Catherine High accepted the Club's proposal that that a
need exists for a service club to be chartered at St. Catherine High School.
This was followed in January 1978 when Mr. Victor Edwards, the Principal of
St. Jago High School also consented to establish a Key Club there. Since
then the Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town took on the Herculean task of
sponsoring a total of ten K–Family clubs. These include the following:
Circle K
Portmore Community College – Old Harbour
Branch
Key Clubs
Jonathon Grant High, Innswood High, St.
Jago High, St. Catherine High
Builders Clubs
St. John’s Primary, St. Catherine
Primary, Friendship Primary, McCauley’s Primary, St. Jago Preparatory
Through these Sponsored Youth Clubs the
Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town provide mentorship and assist to develop
capable and competent leaders for Spanish Town, and by extension, the Nation
of Jamaica. The Sponsored Programmes under the guidance of the Kiwanis Club
of Spanish Town carry out projects in the community at Dare to Care Hospice,
Sunbeam Children’s Home and the Rio Cobre Reform Centre. At least twice per
month the Key Club members of St. Catherine High School visit Dare to Care.
The Key Club members of Jonathon Grant High visit the Spanish Town Infant
School and read to the students there. Whilst the Key Club of St. Catherine
High School carry out the Read Around the World programme with the Builders
at St. John’s Primary School, the Key Club members of St. Jago High carry
out a Community Service Programme at Strathmore Gardens Home of Safety.
The Key Club members focus on the Major
Emphasis Programme which is Children: Their Future Our Focus.
Child Safety is the major theme here.
It is a frequent sight to see the
Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town painting pedestrian crossings with Key Club
members lending their support. Key Clubbers are interested in building a
positive Jamaica and are enthused about giving back to our community.
With continued guidance, they are well on their way to being our leaders of
the future.
