College student Jay Garrick was investigating an experimental form of heavy water, when an accident released hazardous fumes that rendered him unconscious. After inhaling the fumes all night, he awoke in the hospital to discover he could move and react at superhuman speed. He became a crimefighter, a member of the original Justice Society of America, fought with the All-Star Squadran in World War II, then retired then the JSA disbanded to spend time with his wife Joan. Keystone city spent several years out of phase with the rest of the world, its populace kept unconscious by the trio of the Shade, the Fiddler, and the Thinker. When the second Flash discovered Keystone, he awakened the original and the two of them freed the city. They began working together, and after a while team-ups between the retired JSA and the new Justice League of America began to happen. Jay spent several years in limbo with the rest of the JSA, kept young by magic and fighting a never-ending battle against Ragnarok. Since returning to his own dimension, he has acted as a mentor to the younger generations of heroes, and occasionally come out of retirement to face large threats. He finally decided to return to active duty, joining the latest incarnation of the JSA. Bio by Kelson Vibber
