Once upon a time, in a far away place, there lived a beautiful princess. . . We have all heard stories about the damsel in distress and the brave knight who charges in on his white horse to carry her away to safety.   Many of those tales took place in Europe during a time called the Middle Ages.  Do you think everyone lived a fairy tale life during that time period?  Explore Europe between the years of 500 AD to 1500 AD and see for yourself!

On your paper answer these questions.  Use the resources below to help answer the questions.

1.  How was society divided in the Middle Ages?
2.  Describe the five things people had to consider when planning to build a new manor.
3.  Describe six jobs that were important in the Middle Ages in order for manors to meet the basic needs of their inhabitants.
4.  How was food preserved and what did they use instead of plates?
5.  Compare and contrast how daily needs were met in the Middle Ages and how we meet those needs today.
6.  What were two other names for serfs?
7.  How were the lives of serfs different from lives of the nobles?
8.  What were the two most important ports in Italy for trading with the far east?
9.  How did trade affect the lives of medieval people and how does it affect your life?
10.  What goods from the East were in high demand from Europeans?
11.  Explain the average day of a woman both both peasant birth and noble birth.
12.  Compare medieval knights with present day soldiers.  Describe their duties, benefits and respect level.
13.  How were the lives of children different from children today?
14.  How was the idea of religion in the Middle Ages different from any other previous time period?
15.  During the Middle Ages, where were the best scientists found?  How did their ideas get to Europe?

Review all of the facts that you learned about life in the Middle Ages.  How would your life be different if you were transported back in time?  To answer that you will have to think about what your parents jobs are, what your religion is, what kinds of food you eat and what kinds of clothes you wear. 

Your job is to create two time capsules.  One will be for you as a medieval "sixth grader" and the other should be for you today.  In your capsule, you should include:

1.  Items the show what you do for entertainment
2.  Pictures of popular clothing
3.  Examples of literature
4.  Favorite music
5.  Pictures and/or descriptions of favorite foods
6.  Anything else that is important to you

These time capsules will be presented to the class.
