ILAYANGUDI - Epic

The very first reference of ILAYANGUDI in any history book of Tamilnadu is Ilayangudi Maranayanar. One of the so called 63 Saints of Saivaites.

The word epic means recounting of exaggerated and elevated styled deeds of a legendry imaginary hero. When you focus in some particular deeds of an elevated heroism, you are getting neglected or omitted the background history or the hidden truth.

Here, in Ilayangudi Maranayanar story is one among the same exaggerated imaginary story to hide some historical events.

The Nayanmar Puranam was written by Chekkillar (alais) Arunmozhi Thevar during AD 1203. This Puranam is also called Periya Puranam, which consist stories of Saivaite Saints supposed to be lived during AD 6th to 10 century. Cheikkilar never lived or seen any one of the 63 Nayanmars and he written this Puranam by only by hearsay.

The story of Maranayanar goes like this, as he was a rich man, who gave away all his wealth to the poor. One rainy day Lord came to him like a beggar and wanted food from him. He do not have anything to offer to him, still he did not say no to him. He went to his paddy field and collected the seeds which he sowed the day before and offered the fiest to the the beggar. The Lord blessed him and he attained eternal bliss.

This story was popular among Saivaite Literature. There is no concrete evidence for Maranayanar's existence in Ilayangudi. The statue of Maranayanar in local temple might have been installed after 12th or 13th century, when the temple came into Saivaites posssession or when it was converted as Shivaite temple from Samana Palli. Except Chekkillar's Periya Puranam no other Tamil Saivaite Literature says anything about Maranayanar or no where else we can find this story. His year of living is not known to anyone including his story writer.

Hence, it is concluded that Maranayanar Story is a fabricated one to divert the people from Samana thoughts and eraze the Ilayangudi history with Samana Religion.

There is another purana (imaginary) story about Ilayangudi, which goes like this, Deity Indiran created this town and the temple. King Kochadaiyappan (God only knows who is he and when it was) worshipped in this temple to get a child. He got Deity Indiran as his son and he was named as Indrathi Sekara Chera Rajan and the town was called as INDIRA AVATHARA NALLUR. Of course, as any other hindu belief, this story too linked with Maranayanar and declare him as the Kings decendent.
