     We thank God for His guidance that with the initiation of Rev. Canon Eddie Ong, then the vicar of St. Mark’s Church Butterworth, the Chinese Anglican service in Butterworth began at St. Mark’s Church Butterworth every Sunday at 4.00 p.m. from 20th March 1993. Members of the Chinese Anglican service in Butterworth were mainly members of St. Pual’sChurch, Penang who have settled down in Butterworth. In order to encourage the whole family to worship in the same church, the service was conducted in English and Mandarin, and it goes on until today. When the number of members had increased, we needed a place of worship of our own. It happened that the headmaster’s quarter in St. Mark Secondary School was vacant for some time. Led by Rev. Canon Peter Lim Kiam Boon, we approached the Rt. Rev. Tan Sri Dr. Lim Cheng Ean, who was then the Archdeacon of the Upper North, to apply for the permission to use the headmaster’s quarter as the place of worship. The Archdeacon then forwarded our application to the Bishop, the late Tan Sri John Savarimuthu, and the application went through. The headmaster’s quarter had not been occupied for some time, and it was a hiding place for drug addicts. Consequently, the building was in bad shape and needed renovation. The P.C.C. of St. Paul’s Church, Penang had generously decided to bear the cost of the whole renovation project, which amounted to about RM 80,000.

     When the renovation was completed, it was about eighteen months after the first service in St. Mark’s Church, Butterworth, we sifted to the present premise on 4th September 1994. The building was dedicated on 13th November 1994 by the late Bishop, Tan Sri John Savarimuthu; and it is named the Church of the Redeemer, Butterworth. The pastoral care was then under Rev. Canon Peter Lim Kiam Boon and Rev. David Teh Cheng Leong. Rev. Canon Peter Lim was the first Chairman of the Church Committee. On 25th June 1998, the Church of the Redeemer was upgraded to a Missionary District; and the Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Tan Sri Dr. Lim Cheng Ean initiated the thanksgiving service for the occasion. Rev. Canon Peter Lim continued to be the Chairman of the Missionary District Committee. On 9th July 2000, the Bishop, Tan Sri Dr. Lim Cheng Ean again upgraded our church as a parishional church, and the thanksgiving service was also officiated by the Bishop on the same day. By then, the chairman of the P.C.C. was Rev. Stephen Chan Mun Koon.

     Among the fellowships in the church, the Sunday School was the first to be set up and it was when we first started in St. Mark’s Church Butterworth. On 4th June 1995, the Sisters’ Fellowship was set up and followed by the Junior and Youth Fellowship on 16th July 1995. The Church membership in 1994 was only 65 and it is now 150. The number on the electoral roll in 1994 was 52 and it is now 113. Though we have doubled in number after ten years, but it is still a slow growth. We have to pray for the mercy of God to enable all members to strive harder in the ministry of God.

     On the infrastructure of the church, since the dedication of the church, we have carried out four extension works, and the current extension was the biggest of all. This extension has increased the sitting capacity in the church and two rooms were built for office and guestroom. For all we have attained, we have to give glory to the Christ the Lord.
