Biography

Charlie Weasley is Ron Weasley's oldest brother. Although he doesn't actually appear until later, he is discussed in the first Harry Potter book.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Ron mentions Charlie to Harry on the train on the way to Hogwarts. He talks about the rest of his family, his older brother Bill who works for Gringotts, and his older brother Charlie who works with dragons in Romania.

When Harry is chosen as seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, we learn that Charlie was on the house team during his time at Hogwarts and that he was apparently very good-Good enough to be asked to play on the England Quidditch team, but that he turned that offer down in order to research dragons in Romania.

Besides Quidditch, that Charlie works with dragons is really one of the only things we learn about Charlie in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Later, when trying to figure out what to do with Hagrid's illegal Dragon hatchling, Harry thinks of Charlie and suggests to Ron that they send him an owl asking if he is interested in taking Norbert the dragon. Charlie replies that of course he is and suggests that they allow some of his friends to bring Norbert to Romania with them.

So what have learned about Charlie’s character from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

  • He works with dragons in Romania.
  • He was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team and was 'good enough to play for England'.
  • He seems to have the typical Weasley family friendliness, striking this reader as jolly and open like Fred, George, and Ron.
