Dear Jo Anna,
The reunion plans sound exciting. Can't believe it has been 50 years!
My last name is Ford (for 44 years!). You have my correct address.
We moved 1 1/2 years ago to this active adult community so we would have unlimited playmates for tennis, golf, bridge, theater, shopping, etc. It is really fun here.

Thanks for all your work organizing the upcoming reunion.

Helen

P.S. Helen - Hope you will be at the reunion - we would very much like to get pictures of the Girl Scout Troop 8 members!

- - - - - -

Also got a phone call from Ebe Ball in Bay Minette, Al. He is soooo looking forward to the 50th reunion.

Ebe is still working for Ball, Koons, Watson attorney firm.

News from Ed Hedden - So happy that all is well!
Jo Anna,
The operation went well and I am home. The doctor said that I should have less than a 5% chance of any future problems. I had to stay an extra day to get rid of indigestion caused by the air that was inserted as part of the operation. The air was much worse than the kidney removal. It was great to have Charlene visit.
Take care and stay healthy,
Ed

Sun 10/19/2008
Jo Anna,I will have a kidney removed Tuesday Oct. 21st at Flowers Hospital in Dothan. There should be no major problems and only a few weeks of soreness afterwards. It is a non-invasive carcinoma and a great thing that it was discovered early.

Good news about our 50th reunion, it is such a great time to see old friends that live so far apart. The committee deserves much thanks and appreciation for taking on this effort for the benefit of all. - Ed Hedden

Ed,  We will be praying for a quick and complete recovery. You have to attend the reunion next year!- Jo Anna

WOW!
What a great picnic at Jack Koontz farm at the foot of the mountain near Guntersville Dam - so peaceful and relaxing. John Paul donated lots of BBQ ribs, chicken and pork. Everyone brought a casserole and other goodies. Food and conversation were plentiful! Some of those who came that we don't see very often included - Lou (Thorn) English, "Tut" Clements, Mickey Moore, Ed Hedden, Jane (Mathis) and Charles Hopson, Diane (Parker) Phillips. Also, don't know if you remember him but Wayne Ober was there too.

As we talked about the "good ole days" and laughed a lot about things "transpired", someone mentioned having a reunion - a big one next year. Well - this bunch selected, elected, appointed, bribed and coerced not just one chairman but three - to get it off the ground and make it the best ever. After all - it will be our 50th (Please note - the reason for three chairmen: it takes three times as long for us to get anything done now!) Anyway, a lot of exciting ideas were tossed about and it's going to be super fun to plan. A date for the reunion has not been finalized but it will probably be Sept or October 2009. So mark your calendar now and reserve Sept and October 2009 to be with your classmates and we will let you know a final date later.

May Pole - May Day!

I got a call from East Clinton Street School today, they wanted me to contact students that went there in the past to come to May Day on Thursday May 1st for a May Day celebration. There will be a place for former students to sit and recognition those attending. I wrote an article last year about when I was in third grade and we did the May Pole.
Janice Bentley told me today that she read it to her class and they could not believe that we had crate paper dresses that our mothers made. How times
have changed. - Judy Smith
- - - -

If you can go - it starts at 1 p.m. Please call Janice and let her know you will be there. She is making arrangements for chairs for us. Also, take a hat because we will be outdoors in the sun.

April 02, 2008

Note received from Carolyn Thorne Taylor about Phyllis (Sisco) Brown's step father:
Hello all
I am so sad to tell you that Bill Hunter, Phyllis Brown's step father whom she adored, passed away Sunday night. You all may remember that Doris and Bill were married when we were in high school. Phyllis and her sister introduced him to their mother. Phyllis, Doris and Bill had just returned a week ago from visiting Phyllis' step son in Florida. Bill had gone to church on Sunday and gotten a DVD of the FUMC Easter sermon.

He had the DVD player programmed so he and Doris could watch it when she got back from church that night. Isn't that a beautiful way to go?

Phyllis and her family is in a state of shock now but realize this was a blessing for Bill. Please keep them in your prayers as they go through the next few days.

My own Mother has had a stroke, then was in the hospital, rehab and is now in the nursing home here in Ozark. It has been very hard on my Dad for Mother not to be able to ever come home. We are making a new way of life each day with God's help. I have your family in my prayers. Elizabeth (Harris Neal) Wigley

Note received from Betty V. thru Carolyn:
[Sam Chisam]

Dear Ones, I have just talked with Lera and they have had a pretty rough day. Hospice came yesterday and came back today and evaluated Sam.
They strongly urged Lera to put a hospital bed downstairs as all of their bedrooms are upstairs. Lera and Beth had a very difficult time getting Sam upstairs last night. She had a bed put down in their den and she said that Sam was ready to get into it. She says that he is not eating as much but still answers her when she ask him questions. The tumor is at a place that is effecting his speach and his balance. From things that she says, he seems to be getting weaker each day. Bud is coming tomorrow and they are looking forward it that. She plans to sleep on the sofa right next to his bed, the hospice lady was very sure to tell her how important it is for the caregiver to try and take care of themselves. Lera holds strong to her faith and their core church group is very supportive. Will send updates as I get them. Rem ember that God is in control and HE is good......

From Jo Anna
Monday, March 03, 2008

Dear Classmates,
Over the past year and a half I have received numerous cards, and e-mails in response to my e-mails about my Mother (Miriam Gowan). It saddens me to report that she passed away at 5 a.m. (CST) this morning at Carington Health Care Center in Huntsville. For the past couple of weeks, she has not been feeling her best. She had a very bad heart attack this past Friday and since then I have been with her around the clock. Just before she drew has last breath, she opened her eyes and smiled at me. Now isn't that the best homegoing you could ever have with a parent! Such a great feeling when you know that your Mom is now living with Jesus. I will miss having lunch dates with her and just sitting and discussing the weather and the many other things we did together. For awhile I know the emptiness cannot be filled and I will have to re-train myself to not turn on Carlton Cove Road everyday to go see about her.
You just don't know how much your notes and other acts of kindness has mean't to me. I appreciate each and every one.

Mother's funeral is tentatively scheduled for this Thursday at Laughlin Funeral Home with possible graveside service.

The obit should be in the Huntsville Times paper on Wednesday with complete details. You can access via www.al.com.

Love to all,
Jo Anna

New message about Sam:
Hell-o Everyone, I have just talked with Lera and Sam's surgery is to be early on Monday morning. They have to be at the hospital at 5:15 on Monday morning but the preparation for this surgery is very lengthy so they do not what time the actual procedure will take place. To use the gamma knife, he has to wear this thing that looks like a halo and everything has to be exact. There is danger of bleeding and that is Lera's concern. I told her that I would email so that all would be praying Mike (Sam's brother) flew in today and Bettye will get there tomorrow, Beth and Samuel are still there also. Lera sounded so tired tonight but she is such a trooper and has such strong faith. I will update as I hear. GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL>>>>

From Carolyn via Betty Vaughn:

HI EVERYONE, I have just talked with Lera and she was elated. They had been to the doctor today and there were only three larger tumors. The doctor will use the gamma knife on them early in March. Some of the ones that showed up were dead, they were left from earlier and show up on the MRI but are dead. He also has some very small ones (like little seeds) but the three larger ones are the ones that the doctor will take care of now. The steriods have helped the swelling thus his headaches are gone for now. ANY POSITIVE NEWS IS SUCH A BLESSING. Beth and Samuel are there and they are having a good visit. THANKS BE TO GOD FOR ALL OF HIS MANY BLESSINGS..........................

Update on my Mother - Her dementia could not be worse but she is still able to get around (although very slow) in a wheelchair and feed herself.

Her heart is wearing out slowly but she is not in pain. Mother has gangrene in one foot due to poor circulation and gangrene is starting in the other foot. She is totally deaf but enjoys telling everything she thinks she knows! For instance - a prostitute has moved in next door in the nursing home. The lady of the night has parties in her room and keeps Mother awake. Anytime a woman comes to visit their husband - Mother says the old man has acquired a girl friend and she thinks its her job to make sure the woman does not spend the night. If it weren't for the cute stories - I don't think I could get thru this situation - so I daily thank my Lord that I can still hear and laugh!

Take care and those who still have parents - LOVE THEM LOTS.

[Sam Chisam]
Betty Vaughn Christian just this received this update from Lera's cousin Carolyn Drake Thomas. Please keep them in your prayers.

DEAR ONES, I write you tonight with a very heavy heart. I have just talked with Lera for a few minutes. Sam went to Emery on Wed. for a MRI and they were back at Emery for most of the day today. He has multiple tumors on his brain, she said probably too many to use the gamma knife.

They go back to the doctor on Tues. to discuss radiation. She really was to o exhausted to talk, all she could say over and over was for me to hit my knees. Beth and the baby are there with them and I am very thankful for that. Please pray for all of them. Thank you for all of your prayers and concern. I will send updates as I get them. It does not look good, but we all know that GOD IS A MIGHTY GOD......

From Betty V. Christian:
I have just talked with Lera and she is waiting on a call back from Sam's doctor. The rash that Sam has (the doctors believe it is a reaction from
chemo) is not responded well to any medications so far. This along with the chemo treatments as well, are very hard to handle each day. PLEASE remember them in prayer today that some medication will give him some comfort. Thanks and have a blessed day. Will update as hear from Lera.....................

[Sam Chisam]
Hello Everyone, I have just talked with Bettye, Lera's sister, and Sam is back in his room and talking and knows what is going on. His surgery (Gamma-knife) lasted about four hours and the doctors said they accomplished what they wanted to. He has a slight headache and a little bleeding but all is well. Will go home tomorrow if all goes well tonite.

He has to go back to the hospital on Thurs. for pre-op procedures and will have the surgery on the large tumor on Friday. Stanley and I went over yesterday (to their house) and spent about four hours with them. Sam came down and we had a good visit, we wanted to go for the surgery but decided that we wanted to see him and visit before. It was great, Beth's husband and the baby came while we were there and we were glad to get to visit with all of them. It will be good for all of them to have Little Samuel there. Beth and family plan to stay for two more weeks and that is such a blessing for Lera and Sam, too. Bettye plans to stay until after Friday anyway. Friday's surgery is much more intense and could leave some complications so please continue to pray for them. Lera is doing as well as can be expected, she has such faith and a wonderful church family. I will send updates as I get them. Wishing each of you a safe and blessed Thanksgiving....

Just received this e-mail from Carolyn. Sounds like things went well for Sam.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Received from Betty Vaughn this a.m. (note originally from Carolyn) Our family has much to be thankful for tonite. Sam's surgery went well today, the doctor was pleased with the results. The surgery took several hours and there was a little bleeding and swelling but they put in a small tube and balloon to take care of it also, they will use that for radiation treatment later. The doctor said that if anymore tumors apprear, he will use the gamma-knife to take care of them. Bettye said that Sam will probably be in intensive care a couple of days and then move to a regular room. Sam will see an oncologist within the next couple of weeks to start treatment on the places in his lungs. Lera, Bettye and Beth are all staying at the hospital tonite, they are all tired but so releived and thankful. We all appreciate your concern and prayers. We ask for continued prayers............GOD IS SO GOOD.......................I have just talked with Bettye and they have seen Sam, he is awake, alert and has a good recollection of things and of what is going on..

[Information on Sam Chisam's condition.]

Received this note from Brenda Elders. She has been corresponding with Sam's brother.
-Jo Anna

Sam is still at home. He had a couple of doctor appointments today and some
lab work tomorrow. He is scheduled for Gami-blade surgery on Monday
to address the small tumor on his brain. He should be in the
hospital overnight. He has surgery on Friday, the day after
Thanksgiving, to address the large tumor. He should be in the
hospital for about 5 days if there are no complications.

Martha arrived & visited with him today. She thought he looked good.
He told her he doesn't remember a lot about the first few days after
the Gran Maul Seizure but he does good on his memory now.
All of a sudden, he recalled that the AMEX bill was due - no worry, Beth had taken care
of it. She has been a great help to her mom. Of course, Betty, Lera's
sister has been helpful. The family seems to be doing good but they
are all tired.

Donna & I plan to go to Atlanta next week. Looks like it will be
Saturday before we can leave but will be there for the surgeries.

I will keep you posted.  We appreciate your prayers.

Thanks
Mike Chisam-Sam's brother

4/16/2007 [From Jo Anna]
Classmates,

My husband (Buddy) had back surgery on Tues, April 10th and it was more extensive than we expected. The good news, he is expected to be in better shape eventually and we are looking forward to doing some more traveling and working in our church (Whitesburg Baptist, Huntsville).

My Mother had a blood clot in her leg on Thursday, April 5th and had emergency surgery, then the next day had a small heart attack. However, she recovered to the point that she was taken back to the nursing home on April 12th. She needs to have a foot amputated because it was severely damaged from the blood clot but because of her age (93) and health condition, it would be impossible for her to make it thru that type of surgery. She is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. While in the hospital, her grandaughter from Leesburg, Va. brought the newest member of our family to see her (a 7 month old great-grandson). Mother says that her life is complete because she has longed to see this child since the day it was born last August. The nurses in Surgical Intensive Care at the hospital rolled Mother's bed into the hallway to make the visit possible! Hospital rules do not allow children inside the unit.

We have been so very blessed by so many who have called or written about my husband and Mother. I thank each of you from the bottom of my heart.

It has been a very tough week but I know I will continue to do o.k. because of great people like you who have prayed on our behalf.

My Mother continues to be in pain, therefore we are asking for prayer support in that area.

Love to all,

Jo Anna

I will temporarily be without an internet e-mail address. I had a house fire that destroyed my clothes closet (all of my clothes), kitchen, and bathroom. The rest of the house received heat and smoke damage. I will be living at Madison, AL. for at least 4 to 6 months. I lost everything electronic including my computer. When I am online again I will send you an e-mail.

This one from Hattie Hughes  -

One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a Friend.

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his
wife open a package.

What food might this contain?"  The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning:
There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me.  I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the
house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized, but said, I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there
is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house!
There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off
my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound
of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.  In the darkness, she
did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital,
and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer
took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit
with her around the clock.

To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.

So many people came for her funeral; the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great
sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it
doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are
all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out
for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

Each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry; our lives are woven together for a reason.

One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a Friend.

Did you know about the name of our classmate HB?

(Info. provided by HB per our request.)

I usually show "H" as my first name and "B" as my middle initial.
My birth certificate shows H.B. Overton, Jr  May 6,1941!   My father is shown as H. B. Overton  Its been a long time since I researched it, but I seem to remember that the suffix is part of my legal name. On my passport they show H B as my given name and OVERTON JR as my surname. Note there is no periods or commas. Thanks for being interested.

Hey, It's me again! Guess what! It's all my fault! On two of the change notices I sent out I used the wrong email address (mdwilson@wildblue.com) and anyone who used that address got their email returned to them. The correct address is mdwilson@wildblue.net. Oh, well! I'm OLD. Please replace the old .com address with .net. And then if it gets returned it is because the file was too large. With this provider I am limited to 1MB per email. Thanks so much and I am truly embarrassed.

Missed those who could not be with us today at Botanical Gardens. Food and fellowship was great as always!

We talked about the funny things that happened during our high school years and several comments were overheard about Sally's term paper on "ducks" and how they "lite in trees".

Some even remembered (?) how a couple of students jumped out the windows of Mrs. Drake's classroom because they were bored!

Those who attended were:

Cora Pitsinger White
Phyllis Sisco Brown
Jeri Lynn Jones McAllister
Bill McCrary and Betty
Mickey Moore and Charlotte
Jo Anna Gowan Burkett and Buddy
H.B. Overton
Judy Chandler Smith
Sally Fleming Walker

On a sad note - I found out today from one of our classmates that David Hunt passed away in 2003.

Glad to see everyone and even though it rained - it was a wonderful outing (indoors).

9/14/2006 [From Jo Anna]

We have returned from a most fantastic trip to Alaska I won't bore you

with all the details but would like to tell you just a little. Two days after arriving in Anchorage by plane, my husband came down with shingles (on his face) so we were hotel bound for a few days. After he got to feeling better, we visited several museums in the Anchorage area. We had planned to visit Mt. McKinley but torrential rains washed out roads and train tracks. Our mini trip to Whittier was exciting. We cruised to a glacier and watched parts of it fall, saw sea otters and met some very nice people. On Tues the 28th, we flew from Cooper's Landing via bush plane thru the mountains and over glaciers to Montegue Island in the Prince William Sound. Montegue Island has no roadways, utilities, or anyone living there. As we neared the island, we could see that fog was rolling in very quickly and landing would be tricky but our pilot (retired from commercial flying) certainly knew what he was doing and got us down safely on the beach. From there, we back-packed our belongings (clothing, food, pots/pans, fishing equip, camera, sleeping bags, etc.) for about 1 1/2 miles to an Alaskan forest rangers cabin. This cabin had no electricity, or running water and our cell phones did not work either.

The peace and quiet was wonderful. Shortly, a young bear visited - we had invaded his territory, then we saw a large bear in the river below the cabin catching and eating salmon. We fished, and fished and fished the entire week, spotting bears daily. We ate and ate and ate salmon 2-3 times daily. What a way to live! After a week of "heaven", the bush pilot picked us up on the beach where we returned to Coopers Landing, then on to Anchorage. Sam and Lera (Harwell) Chisam were in Anchorage visiting their daughter and family. The daughter has a precious 3 month old son (Sam and Lera's only grandchild) and we got to see all of them our last day in Anchorage.

End of story - we are glad to be home but sure would like to return to Alaska in the future. It was real tempting to call the kids and tell them to "send the dog, sell the farm because we are moving to Alaska" and we probably would do so except for the -60 deg winters and the grandchildren being so far away!

August 14 2006  From Sam Chisam thru another classmate...

One of our former schoolmates, Margaret Anne Goldsmith (Class of 59) is one of the four local Huntsvillians to be honored on Thursday night by the local chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice.

This prestigious award is given for an individuals contributions to bridge-building efforts in the community and region. Margaret Anne and her family have contributed much to the history of Huntsville, including Huntsville Hospital and the place we spent our Friday nights for many years (Beer Beer for old Huntsville High), Goldsmith-Schiffman Field.

Her most significant contribution was the gift of her family manuscripts to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. If/when you visit this museum in Washington a part of your past will be there. This is also true of the Space Museum in D.C. and the Kennedy Center in Cape Kennedy.

Congratulations Margaret Anne this is a well deserved honor.

August 14 2006 From Robert Staggs...

Jo Anna, just an update on my " bull riding" grandson. He has decided that west Texas is just too far from Florida. He has transferred to north west Mississippi community college, in Senatobia, Ms., about 40 miles south of Memphis, Tn.

he is leaving this Friday to go to Georgia and hog hunt with his other grandfather at their camp. Then he is going on over to Mississippi to meet his new roommate and spend a few days with him and his family, then the two of them are going on to school. Because he is a transfer student, he is not going to be able to compete the first semester.

Mickey Moore was in town recently and called. We spent most of the day together, talking about old times. It was good to see him.

Classmates,  [20 July 2006]

I have just talked with Margaret Anne Goldsmith. Her son, his wife and three small children reside in Jerusalem, Israel. At the current time, he does not feel threatened. However, Margaret Anne is a very worried Mother and Grandmother.

She asks that we pray that Israel will soon be able to establish a boundary between Israel and Lebanon. I think that we should also pray that the terrorists will be eradicated very soon.

If other classmates have relatives in Israel, Lebanon or other nearby countries - please let me know.

Jo Anna, For those that have an interest in gardening, the latest Alabama Gardener magazine (July/August 2006 issue) has an article by Debra Burrell that she wrote on my garden and the pictures she took of it. She is a Jefferson County Master Gardener who does free lance writing and takes her own pictures for the magazine articles she writes. She did a nice job and
took some good pictures. The title of the article is a little strange but it was selected by the magazine staff and not Debra.

Received from Judy (Chandler) Smith [4/20/2006]:

Attached is a WORD document that I am sending to Old Huntsville Magazine for their upcoming issue with some photos from 1950 in the newspaper that I saved. Thought you might enjoy reading a bit about the old days.

Mayday 1950 by Judy Chandler Smith

As I ride down East Clinton Street and stop to watch the children practicing the Dance of the Maypole, I couldn’t help but remember when Anne Walker and I were in Mrs. Baker’s third grade class at East Clinton Street School.

We were eight years old, and so excited to be in the class chosen for the Maypole dance. All of the girls had to have crepe paper dresses made, mine was pink, my mother’s favorite color. Anne’s was blue.

Mrs. Baker would get really mad at everyone for talking especially Anne and me. She would tape our mouths shut. If that didn’t work she would draw and circle on the blackboard and we would have to stand with our nose in the circle for a class, and if that didn’t work, she had an eighteen-inch ruler that she would use on your back with the wrath of God. I prayed everyday that I could keep my mouth shut and be chosen to go outside thirty minutes before school got out at 2:30 p.m. to dust erasers.

Believe it or not Anne I managed to not miss behave and were allowed to participate in the weaving of the crepe paper streamers on a beautiful sunny day in May 1950.

Sympathy is extended to Hattie Marie (Webb) Hughes in the death of her mother:

Hi Jo Anna -

Just a brief note to tell you that a very difficult year ended when I received the call that my sister and I knew was at hand.

Mamma (Mrs. Celestine Webb) lost her battle with colon cancer a little after midnight.

We don't know how long it will take the State of Florida, or the funeral home down there, to finish their proceedings.

The body will be flown back to Huntsville and we will have a very brief grave side burial service, probably on Tuesday. That is all the information I have at this point in time and will try to let you know more details later today or tomorrow.

Lucile Woods Johnston

Aug. 22, 1914 March 6, 2006

Author, speaker, Christian and civic leader, devoted wife and mother, Lucile Woods Johnston, died peacefully with a smile in her home Monday.

Born in Dallas, she married James W. Johnston in 1937 and they moved onto Monte Sano Mountain after returning from their honeymoon. They created their family in the 1940s and in 1945 she and her husband established Johnston Concrete Products Co. They became devoted to Huntsville but also traveled extensively throughout the world. A tireless civic leader, Johnston's volunteer services included: Red Cross war work; helped establish the first classical radio station in north Alabama; helped introduce the first educational television in the U.S. (forerunner of PBS); chaired the citywide PTA Media Committee; introduced a parent-supervised recreation program for students at the YMCA; taught American History courses in homes, churches and clubs of Huntsville; president of the Huntsville Garden Club; president of the Huntsville Music Club; charter member of the Altrusa Club; charter member of the Rotary Ann Club; and longtime member of the DAR. Her Christian work

included: hosting the first Ladies Prayer Luncheon and meetings to launch Christian Women's Clubs in Huntsville; first Alabama state coordinator for The Freedom Council; helped start the first of thousands of Mayor's Prayer Breakfasts sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce and the many student seminars in conjunction with presidential, governors', and mayors' prayer breakfasts; prayer chairman of Campus Crusade for Christ and participated in their first Executive Seminar in six Asian countries in 1973 and in 1977; participated in Here's Life in Bangalore, India; and Methodist Lay Witness Missions in the U.S., Ireland and the first one in England. She donated income from her first book to help start Young Life and Youth for Christ in Huntsville and income from her 2nd book to Bibles for the World and the Huntsville Downtown Rescue Mission. She and her husband's many gifts to the community included two houses for the Harris Home orphanage. After their daughter's death, they gave 240 acres to Madison County for the Sharon Johnston Park. Johnston's third book, Celebrations of a Nation, (now in its 5th edition) has been reviewed as a "thoroughly researched, novel-like history" of the origins of American democracy and our nation's foundation of faith. For two decades Johnston was a national featured speaker at professional women's groups, Christian Women's Clubs, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and radio and television programs. Articles were written about her in Campus Crusade Magazine, The Freedom Council Magazine, Cross Roads Magazine and the Christian Revolution. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for decades, served for three years as deacon and three years as elder of Central Presbyterian Church (and represented them at North Alabama Presbytery and General Assembly), and has been a member of Southside Baptist Church since 1995, participating in numerous classes and seminars there. Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, James W.

Johnston, and her daughter, Sharon Ann Johnston. She is survived by her sons, Barry Woods Johnston of Baltimore, and Stephen Russell Johnston of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Gretel Elizabeth Johnston of Scottsboro; and grandchildren, Russell Ross Johnston of Nashville, and Stephanie Kristin Johnston of Asheville, N.C. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Laughlin Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Southside Baptist Church with Dr. Murray Wilton officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Johnston family requests donations to the Huntsville Rescue Mission.

Note received from Richard Finlaw:
Heard from Danny Thomas. From his notes it appears that his home in
Slidell, Louisiana suffered extensive damage from flooding. It sounds as
though he is getting it all back together. He is working on his home and
working with FEMA to maintain as normal a life as possible. It's good to
know they are both safe and well.

Note received from Robert Staggs.
Jo Anna , my wife Tammy, has been fighting breast cancer for five years.
The cancer had gone to her liver, it was found there in 2002. She has people all around the world praying for her. She has had some very radical chemo treatments in the past. Last week her doctor said he could not see any sign of cancer in her liver. He said this was the first time he had ever seen a liver clear of cancer once it has been discovered there. Last week he took her off chemo, and said she is somewhat in remission. GOD has been very good to us, and we give him all the praise for her recovery.

11/15/2005, Note received from Charles Hopson [about Henry and Nancy Waites]

I visited Henry and Nancy yesterday afternoon at their UAB Townhouse.

They are both doing well. Henry is in good spirits and both appear to have great attitudes about the hand they have been dealt. They seem genuinely grateful to be alive and for all the blessings of this life. At this point there are no complications and no signs of rejecting the kidney. Henry was hoping to go home today after a meeting with his doctors. He has had a rough 5 or 6 years with heart surgery, kidney failure, dialasis, kidney transplant and just surviving the merciless passage of time. It was good to see him again and to understand anew that moving toward death is only another stage of the life process.

My kindest regards,

Charles

My sister Linda, left her home in Biloxi Sunday. She is safe in Atlanta with her daughter. Her son stayed in Biloxi but tonight we received a message he is ok and enroute to Florida. No word on the house but we expect it to be destroyed based on its location and the total
devastation. My family has much to be thankful for tonight--we are all alive and safe.

Hello, I am fine. Although I live in Massachusetts now, I had a home in Slidell - the eye of Katrina. Gone from what I understand and according to the news I have gotten. I heard from Danny Thomas who is living in Slidell.

He said he was in Birmingham with his wife and he is fine. He said the neighborhood in which we had homes is a lake.

If anyone needs a place to live - I have room here. If I can do anything to help, let me know how. I have another e-mail address - please add this to the list.

Bobby Smith's flower garden has been chosen as one of four gardens to be part of the First Annual Hydrangea Tour (Alabama Hydrangea Society) in Birmingham to take place June 18th from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Bobby invites all classmates to come if you can make it. The cost is $5 per garden or all 4 for $15. Tickets may be purchased on the day of the tour at Bobby's garden.

The brochure he sent to me says that you can see four spectacular gardens featuring hydrangea! Each garden is unique in its setting and shows how well hydrangeas can be used in both sun and shade, mixed with annuals, perennials, groundcovers and other shrubs.

Alice and Bob Smith's garden - Variety is the one word that describes the Smith garden on Shades Mountain. Not only are there nearly 20 different varieties of hydrangeas, but there are many other collections as well.

Numerous varieties of notable plants include clematis, tree peonies, evergreen and native analeas, camellias, crepe myrtles, Japanese maples, and viburnums, all scattered throughout the garden with the hydrangeas.

In addition, one will notice perennials such as hostas, ferns, heucheras, epimediums, and Bear's Britches in shade areas. And for the sun enthusiast, there are beds with roses, dahlias, lantana and many exquisite lilies.

Sympathy is extended to Gerlinda (Reisig) Talbot and family in the death of her father Dr. Gerhard H.R. Reisig. He passed away Wednesday in Moorehead, Minnesota. The funeral will be Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Huntsville at 3 p.m. with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Died March 9, 2005 Dr. Gerhard H.R. Reisig passed away Wednesday at the home of his daughter in Moorhead, Minn. Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1910, Dr. Reisig attended the Nikolaischule there through high school. He received his engineering degree from the Technical University in Dresden, Germany, and later earned his doctorate in engineering from the University of Braunschweig, Germany. After working for the Siemens Co. in Berlin for several years, he joined the Wernher von Braun rocket team in Peenemuende, Germany. In 1946, he moved with the team to El Paso, Texas, and in 1951, to Huntsville. He remained with the team until his retirement, working early on at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and later, at Marshall Space Flight Center. Soon after retirement, he taught for a year at Concordia College in Moorhead, as a visiting professor of physics. He continued working on various projects and authored a comprehensive history of rocket technology. Until the last several years, he regularly participated in space-related meetings and gave lectures. Thus, he maintained contact with scientists in many countries and found joy and fulfillment in encouraging young scientists. Dr. Reisig was an avid musician from his school days. He played the violin and viola and participated in school and university orchestras. In Huntsville, he played in chamber music groups and developed many close friendships along the way. News!  Classmate causes disturbance in Cathedral!

Her report:

The Cathedral (appropriately named Notre Dame de Strasbourg and described by Victor Hugo as a "giant and delicate marvel") was started in 1176 and finished in 1439. It is totally magnificent, almost beyond description, and contains brightly colored, gigantic Rose windows and other huge windows of golden tones. Its height was the highest building in Christendom until it was overtaken by the towers in Ulm and Cologne, and is totally impacted by the City. It contains beautiful art masterpieces and the largest, most fantastic astronomical clock with animated figures that you will ever be able to get as close to as you can get to the one here.

While we were waiting in the little nook for the clock to do its "thing", I decided I was going to die of thirst at any second, so pulled a bottle of water out of my bag and cracked it open. I suppose "Cracked" would be an appropriate word to use here; when I twisted the cap it went off and sounded like a bomb had exploded, reverberated throughout the entire cathedral and had people headed for the exits and toward me to see what was going on. Needless to say I was totally soaked, the floor (which was luckily great slabs of rough stone) and the wall behind me were as totally soaked - and it was just a LITTLE bottle of water. It was one of CLINT'S bottles of mineral water with gas, the day was a bit warm and the water had heated itself up in that bag. I guess I am lucky it did not explode inside the bag when we were walking down the sidewalk - that probably would have injured me in places that would not be so terrific. Anyway, I got refreshed inside and out, pretended nothing had happened and continued our walk-about after watching the clock.

(-from our own and dear Hattie Marie Webb Hughes)  August 2001.  She and Clint currently reside in Germany.

May 26, 2001, Classmates join for a special outing at the wonderful farm of Jo Anna and Buddy.

In the cool afternoon, we shared memories, food and Jo Anna's peach tea.

If you couldn't be with us, we wished you could have heard Jeri Lynn and Sally recite a poem they learned in an HHS English class.  What great memories they have!

Then there was this delicious peach tea. We all know Buddy's  secret

Jo Anna lead us on a hike of the territory, deep into the woods to view the flora and fauna.  She said deer and coyote are often seen there. During our hike, some joked can't you see this on TV:   "HHS classmates missing -  thought to be within sixteen miles of the school or walking distance of the south Parkway Wal-Mart - film at 10!"  We all made it back to the picnic site safe and sound but in need of a little rest.

After sun-down, under a clear, star filled sky in north Alabama, we roasted marshmallows around a bonfire.  Jo Anna provided the makings for the graham crackers and chocolate "smoors"- delectable treat.

Note from Jo Anna our class secretary and picnic host:

Those attending our get-together were:

Carole Ann (Gingrich) Sullivan
Sally (Fleming) Walker
Jeri Lynn (Jones) McAllister and Bobby
Virginia (Huth) Fowler and Bob
Diane Weston
Margaret Anne Goldsmith and Mike Maples
Bruce Hammer and Barbara
Bill Hedges
Jack Koontz and Marguerite
Sam Tumminello and Pat
Jo Anna (Gowan) and Buddy

Those of you who had to cancel at the last minute - WE MISSED YOU and hope to see you soon.

This is Buddy, Jo Anna's husband next to the chimney at the site of the picnic. He has the secret peach tea recipe!  Does he look like he'll tell it?  I don't think so.

The chimney, circa 1800's is all that remains of a log cabin that once was on the farm. They plan to take it down - they're afraid it may fall. [Web workeer's note: Here's an idea - put up a small fence around it, for safety sake - and leave it standing - see how long it can remain.  Maybe Huntsville Historic Society would like to recognize it!  I think it's a great landmark.]

Big Bar-B-Que Bash at Bubba's!

Thanks to special arrangements made by Margaret Ann Goldsmith, class members met at the popular downtown Huntsville restaurant, Bubba's, for a relaxed evening of dining, visiting and Huntsville reminiscing.  What a great fall outing!

More outings are planned. Jo Anna suggested it might be fun to attend a Huntsville High football game as a group next season.

If you weren't at Bubba's then you probably don't know...

Which classmates have vacationed in Hawaii, and which one was just there in June.

Which classmate is taking computer lessons and will soon be on email with us?

What classmate and former HHS cheerleader,  couldn't attend because she was reportedly in France?

Do you remember where the first Mullins Restaurant was located?

Do you remember the Tick-Tock Inn and Skating Rink?  You do?  Well, where was it?

Who was born in an upstairs medical clinic on Washington Street?

Which classmate was born in Athens Alabama?

What  HHS  basketball and football star and classmate was with us?

Did you know Margaret Ann Goldsmith will be honored at a special dedication ceremony of Goldsmith-Schiffman Field (former home of the Crimson Panthers) on Friday October 27th? Do you know why?

Who was celebrating their fifty-ninth birthday that very day?

Well, these people were there and can answer most of the questions!

October 1, 2000

Many "Huntsvillians" recently reported their name and birth dates.  There may be more and these will be added to the scroll when we find them.  Thanks to all who provided information.  There are twenty people listed.  Take a look at "The Huntsvillians"

Also added is a new link page for some popular Huntsville Webs - you may want to visit some.  Take a look at "Links"

September 5, 2000

Margaret Anne Goldsmith has made arrangements for us to have a get-together on Friday, October 20th, 6 p.m. at Bubba's (downtown Huntsville restaurant). There will be no charge for the room and everyone can order from the menu. If you plan to attend, you must send an e-mail to Margaret Anne. She will need to know the number of people (you and your spouse, etc.) and your name. Please put "BUBBA'S" in the subject line. Thanks to Margaret Anne for setting up this get-together. We felt really good about getting almost 30 classmates together last time and I bet this one will be even larger. Hope to see you there.

Around 250, representing every decade from the 1930's on, showed up during the afternoon.  The earliest class represented was 1931; the latest was 1996.

The reunion was a spin-off of the class of 1955's 45th reunion, which was held Friday and Saturday."

About 1999

Date uncertain about 1999 or 2000
(Dear Jo Anna - when did we start this web stuff? Time flies!)

Dear Classmates,

WE ARE UPDATING OUR ADDRESS/E-MAIL LIST

Today, I will be mailing a total of 145 cards to classmates requesting an e-mail address. Before the mad rush - I would like to verify your mailing address/zip/area code & phone# and if you have a personal web site - send that address also. If you would send that info to me by return e-mail, I would be most appreciative. The format below will be sent to all new e-mail classmates but all portions apply to current e-mail classmates.

( Classmate name )

By return e-mail, please send your current mailing address/zip/area code/phone #(s) and personal web site address. Your mailing, e-mail and personal web site address will be updated/added to the following and shared with other classmates:

1) HHS59 database address listing

2) HHS59 e-mail classmate news list

If you have news to share about yourself or other classmates you may send to: burthefarm@juno.com and I will be glad to re-send to all HHS59 e-mail classmates only if you indicate in the subject line - SEND TO HHS59 CLASSMATES. A complete list of names/e-mail addresses/web site addresses will be e-mailed to classmates periodically for those who want to contact classmates or send classmate news directly to a classmate.

New names/e-mail addresses and changes in e-mail addresses will be posted to the HHS59 e-mail classmate news as received and/or verified. The e-mail classmate news list was set up as a means of finding classmates via e-mail, updating addresses, corresponding with classmates, to put classmates in touch with classmates and to post information about and for classmates (honoraries, illness, obits, web site info, mini reunions, and the big reunion every 5 years, etc.).

What you personally send to a classmate is between you and that classmate. Some of our classmates are using a business e-mail address and do not want to receive unsolicited information (information not pertaining to classmates). Some have a home e-mail address and do not want to received unsolicited information. We are so very glad that you want to be notified of class happenings and to find classmates. You will also want to visit the HHS59 web site that was created by Sam Tumminello.
