Check the Old Huntsville magazine I have my fifth story since June in it. Maybe some day I'll learn how to do something and get a REAL JOB. This story is dedicated to the seventh son born on Christmas day. He'll be 21 on the 25th. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Just a quick note to let all know that I'm now a great-grandmother.

Please add my son, Scott Smith to your prayer list as a knot came up on his left elbow, he waited about two months, his doctor gave him steorids, which made him really sick, yesterday he had it drained, the fluid was suppose to be clear, it wasn't indicating a form of cancer. We are waiting the results. He uses his arm in his business to paint.

My daughter, Allison Click called us at 5:30 a.m. on Monday having chest pains and hard to breathe. M.D. took her to the emergency room at Huntsville Hospital. Finally got a room 557 where we are still having MRI and cat scans run. Has a blood clot in one lung, due to a miscarriage on August 27th. Also has terrible chest and back pains, can't sit up. Keep her in your prayers.

Also want to let you all know that my dear little Mother had a heart attack on Sept. 20th. She was moved to re-hab center on Sept. 26th.

Outlook is not good because she suffered severe damage to heart muscle.

We have returned from a most fantastic trip to Alaska I won't bore you

with all the details but would like to tell you just a little. Two days after arriving in Anchorage by plane, my husband came down with shingles (on his face) so we were hotel bound for a few days. After he got to feeling better, we visited several museums in the Anchorage area. We had planned to visit Mt. McKinley but torrential rains washed out roads and train tracks. Our mini trip to Whittier was exciting. We cruised to a glacier and watched parts of it fall, saw sea otters and met some very nice people. On Tues the 28th, we flew from Cooper's Landing via bush plane thru the mountains and over glaciers to Montegue Island in the Prince William Sound. Montegue Island has no roadways, utilities, or anyone living there. As we neared the island, we could see that fog was rolling in very quickly and landing would be tricky but our pilot (retired from commercial flying) certainly knew what he was doing and got us down safely on the beach. From there, we back-packed our belongings (clothing, food, pots/pans, fishing equip, camera, sleeping bags, etc.) for about 1 1/2 miles to an Alaskan forest rangers cabin. This cabin had no electricity, or running water and our cell phones did not work either.

The peace and quiet was wonderful. Shortly, a young bear visited - we had invaded his territory, then we saw a large bear in the river below the cabin catching and eating salmon. We fished, and fished and fished the entire week, spotting bears daily. We ate and ate and ate salmon 2-3 times daily. What a way to live! After a week of "heaven", the bush pilot picked us up on the beach where we returned to Coopers Landing, then on to Anchorage. Sam and Lera (Harwell) Chisam were in Anchorage visiting their daughter and family. The daughter has a precious 3 month old son (Sam and Lera's only grandchild) and we got to see all of them our last day in Anchorage.

End of story - we are glad to be home but sure would like to return to Alaska in the future. It was real tempting to call the kids and tell them to "send the dog, sell the farm because we are moving to Alaska" and we probably would do so except for the -60 deg winters and the grandchildren being so far away!

Helen Duke Ellis Johnston, 89, of Huntsville passed away Monday. Mrs. Johnston was a longtime Huntsville resident. She was a civic leader and among her many interests were the Huntsville Symphony, the Huntsville Art League, the American Lung Association, and the Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband, William H. Johnston; three daughters, Patricia Ellis Vidler and husband, Michael, of Greenville, S.C., Christy Ellis Catts and Cathy Ellis Nickelson, of Huntsville; two stepchildren, William H. Johnston Jr., and wife, Claire, and Pattie Johnston Cline and husband, John, all of Huntsville; ten grandchildren, John Martin, Warren Catts, Ryan Catts, Adrian Graviet, Ellis Barnard, Jesse Barnard, John Cline, Mary Kelly Horton, Anna Clay Johnston and William Johnston III; six great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian Iler and husband, Norman, of Venice, Fla., and two sistersin-law, Betty Duke and Elsie Duke of Louisville, Ky. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Church of the Nativity. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Reverend Andy Anderson officiating. Henshaw of Towson, Md.; two brothers Richard Drummond and Louis Drummond; sister, Dell Dillard, all of Alabama; and four grandchildren. August 14 2006  From Sam Chisam thru another classmate...

One of our former schoolmates, Margaret Anne Goldsmith (Class of 59) is one of the four local Huntsvillians to be honored on Thursday night by the local chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice.

This prestigious award is given for an individuals contributions to bridge-building efforts in the community and region. Margaret Anne and her family have contributed much to the history of Huntsville, including Huntsville Hospital and the place we spent our Friday nights for many years (Beer Beer for old Huntsville High), Goldsmith-Schiffman Field.

Her most significant contribution was the gift of her family manuscripts to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. If/when you visit this museum in Washington a part of your past will be there. This is also true of the Space Museum in D.C. and the Kennedy Center in Cape Kennedy.

Congratulations Margaret Anne this is a well deserved honor.

August 14 2006 From Robert Staggs...

Jo Anna, just an update on my " bull riding" grandson. He has decided that west Texas is just too far from Florida. He has transferred to north west Mississippi community college, in Senatobia, Ms., about 40 miles south of Memphis, Tn.

he is leaving this Friday to go to Georgia and hog hunt with his other grandfather at their camp. Then he is going on over to Mississippi to meet his new roommate and spend a few days with him and his family, then the two of them are going on to school. Because he is a transfer student, he is not going to be able to compete the first semester. 

Mickey Moore was in town recently and called. We spent most of the day together, talking about old times. It was good to see him.

I have just talked with Margaret Anne Goldsmith. Her son, his wife and three small children reside in Jerusalem, Israel. At the current time, he does not feel threatened. However, Margaret Anne is a very worried Mother and Grandmother.

She asks that we pray that Israel will soon be able to establish a boundary between Israel and Lebanon. I think that we should also pray that the terrorists will be eradicated very soon.

If other classmates have relatives in Israel, Lebanon or other nearby countries - please let me know.

Sue Fowler Tidwell

Sue Fowler Tidwell, 65, of Huntsville died Friday. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Tidwell was a very generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Survivors include her husband, Billy M. Tidwell of Huntsville; children, Susan Tidwell of Huntsville, Billy Tidwell Jr. and his wife, Lori, of Nashville, and Patrick Tidwell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Huntsville; grandchildren, Lee and Shelby Wolaver; sister, Loretta Breasseale of Knoxville; and brother, Clyde Fowler Jr. of Huntsville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel at the funeral home with Dr. David Hull and Dr. Ralph Langley officiating. Jo Anna, For those that have an interest in gardening, the latest Alabama Gardener magazine (July/August 2006 issue) has an article by Debra Burrell that she wrote on my garden and the pictures she took of it. She is a Jefferson County Master Gardener who does free lance writing and takes her own pictures for the magazine articles she writes. She did a nice job and took some good pictures. The title of the article is a little strange but it was selected by the magazine staff and not Debra.

Johnie M. "Buck" Cantrell, 97, of Huntsville died Saturday. Mr. Cantrell was a native of Madison County. He had retired from the Shell Oil Company and Brooks and Collier. He was a charter member of Oak Park Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Wallace Cantrell. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Jim Luna; two grandchildren, Susan and her husband, Lewis DeCarlo and Jeff and his wife, Stacy Luna; and four great-grandchildren, Lauren DeCarlo, Gabriel DeCarlo, Tori Luna and Nick Luna. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Berryhill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Harold Fanning, the Rev. Mayday 1950 by Judy Chandler Smith

As I ride down East Clinton Street and stop to watch the children practicing the Dance of the Maypole, I couldn’t help but remember when Anne Walker and I were in Mrs. Baker’s third grade class at East Clinton Street School.

We were eight years old, and so excited to be in the class chosen for the Maypole dance. All of the girls had to have crepe paper dresses made, mine was pink, my mother’s favorite color. Anne’s was blue.

Mrs. Baker would get really mad at everyone for talking especially Anne and me. She would tape our mouths shut. If that didn’t work she would draw and circle on the blackboard and we would have to stand with our nose in the circle for a class, and if that didn’t work, she had an eighteen-inch ruler that she would use on your back with the wrath of God. I prayed everyday that I could keep my mouth shut and be chosen to go outside thirty minutes before school got out at 2:30 p.m. to dust erasers.

Believe it or not Anne I managed to not miss behave and were allowed to participate in the weaving of the crepe paper streamers on a beautiful sunny day in May 1950.

Hi Jo Anna -

Just a brief note to tell you that a very difficult year ended when I received the call that my sister and I knew was at hand.

Mamma (Mrs. Celestine Webb) lost her battle with colon cancer a little after midnight.

We don't know how long it will take the State of Florida, or the funeral home down there, to finish their proceedings.

The body will be flown back to Huntsville and we will have a very brief grave side burial service, probably on Tuesday. That is all the information I have at this point in time and will try to let you know more details later today or tomorrow.

Lucile Woods Johnston

Author, speaker, Christian and civic leader, devoted wife and mother, Lucile Woods Johnston, died peacefully with a smile in her home Monday.

Born in Dallas, she married James W. Johnston in 1937 and they moved onto Monte Sano Mountain after returning from their honeymoon. They created their family in the 1940s and in 1945 she and her husband established Johnston Concrete Products Co. They became devoted to Huntsville but also traveled extensively throughout the world. A tireless civic leader, Johnston's volunteer services included: Red Cross war work; helped establish the first classical radio station in north Alabama; helped introduce the first educational television in the U.S. (forerunner of PBS); chaired the citywide PTA Media Committee; introduced a parent-supervised recreation program for students at the YMCA; taught American History courses in homes, churches and clubs of Huntsville; president of the Huntsville Garden Club; president of the Huntsville Music Club; charter member of the Altrusa Club; charter member of the Rotary Ann Club; and longtime member of the DAR. Her Christian work

included: hosting the first Ladies Prayer Luncheon and meetings to launch Christian Women's Clubs in Huntsville; first Alabama state coordinator for The Freedom Council; helped start the first of thousands of Mayor's Prayer Breakfasts sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce and the many student seminars in conjunction with presidential, governors', and mayors' prayer breakfasts; prayer chairman of Campus Crusade for Christ and participated in their first Executive Seminar in six Asian countries in 1973 and in 1977; participated in Here's Life in Bangalore, India; and Methodist Lay Witness Missions in the U.S., Ireland and the first one in England. She donated income from her first book to help start Young Life and Youth for Christ in Huntsville and income from her 2nd book to Bibles for the World and the Huntsville Downtown Rescue Mission. She and her husband's many gifts to the community included two houses for the Harris Home orphanage. After their daughter's death, they gave 240 acres to Madison County for the Sharon Johnston Park. Johnston's third book, Celebrations of a Nation, (now in its 5th edition) has been reviewed as a "thoroughly researched, novel-like history" of the origins of American democracy and our nation's foundation of faith. For two decades Johnston was a national featured speaker at professional women's groups, Christian Women's Clubs, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and radio and television programs. Articles were written about her in Campus Crusade Magazine, The Freedom Council Magazine, Cross Roads Magazine and the Christian Revolution. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for decades, served for three years as deacon and three years as elder of Central Presbyterian Church (and represented them at North Alabama Presbytery and General Assembly), and has been a member of Southside Baptist Church since 1995, participating in numerous classes and seminars there. Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, James W.

Johnston, and her daughter, Sharon Ann Johnston. She is survived by her sons, Barry Woods Johnston of Baltimore, and Stephen Russell Johnston of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Gretel Elizabeth Johnston of Scottsboro; and grandchildren, Russell Ross Johnston of Nashville, and Stephanie Kristin Johnston of Asheville, N.C. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Laughlin Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Southside Baptist Church with Dr. Murray Wilton officiating. Ethel Hunt "Twin" Herring, 91, formerly of Huntsville, died Monday in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Herring. Mrs. Herring was born in Tellico Plains, Tenn., and attended the University of Tennessee at Martin. She was a lifelong homemaker and was a founding member of Trinity United Methodist Church along with her husband. Survivors include one son, J. Michael Herring of Coronado, Calif.; one daughter, Joyce Herring of Atlanta; one granddaughter, Susan Bromma of San Diego; one grandson, Chris Herring of Phoenix; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Huntsville Memory Gardens with the Rev. Heard from Danny Thomas. From his notes it appears that his home in 
Slidell, Louisiana suffered extensive damage from flooding. It sounds as 
though he is getting it all back together. He is working on his home and 
working with FEMA to maintain as normal a life as possible. It's good to

Jo Anna , my wife Tammy, has been fighting breast cancer for five years.
The cancer had gone to her liver, it was found there in 2002. She has people all around the world praying for her. She has had some very radical chemo treatments in the past. Last week her doctor said he could not see any sign of cancer in her liver. He said this was the first time he had ever seen a liver clear of cancer once it has been discovered there. Last week he took her off chemo, and said she is somewhat in remission. GOD has been very good to us, and we give him all the praise for her recovery.

11/15/2005, Note received from Charles Hopson [about Henry and Nancy Waites]

I visited Henry and Nancy yesterday afternoon at their UAB Townhouse.

They are both doing well. Henry is in good spirits and both appear to have great attitudes about the hand they have been dealt. They seem genuinely grateful to be alive and for all the blessings of this life. At this point there are no complications and no signs of rejecting the kidney. Henry was hoping to go home today after a meeting with his doctors. He has had a rough 5 or 6 years with heart surgery, kidney failure, dialasis, kidney transplant and just surviving the merciless passage of time. It was good to see him again and to understand anew that moving toward death is only another stage of the life process.

This past weekend Henry Waites called me and asked that I extend a "hearty thank you" to classmates. He appreciates the thoughts, prayers, cards and phone calls so very much and said they have really helped him to get well faster and he will be home in a couple of weeks. You are a wonderful group!

My sister Linda, left her home in Biloxi Sunday. She is safe in Atlanta with her daughter. Her son stayed in Biloxi but tonight we received a message he is ok and enroute to Florida. No word on the house but we expect it to be destroyed based on its location and the total devastation. My family has much to be thankful for tonight--we are all alive and safe.

The doctor whom Sam saw today reported that the site where the melanoma was is clear, and the lymph nodes had also tested clear – PTL!  Next week he will see the surgeon to discuss if any further treatment is needed.   We would like to express  our heartfelt thanks for the many prayers which has sustained and comforted  us  during this time. Please continue to pray for Sam as he heals and for continued good reports.

Sympathy is extended to Jerome Knight whose father passed away on Wednesday (June 15th) at Peachtree Hospice in Duluth, Georgia. Mr. Knight was buried in Huntsville, Ala. today (Monday - June 20th). Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. at Huntsville Memory Gardens with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home.

Bobby Smith's flower garden has been chosen as one of four gardens to be part of the First Annual Hydrangea Tour (Alabama Hydrangea Society) in Birmingham to take place June 18th from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Bobby invites all classmates to come if you can make it. The cost is $5 per garden or all 4 for $15. Tickets may be purchased on the day of the tour at Bobby's garden.

The brochure he sent to me says that you can see four spectacular gardens featuring hydrangea! Each garden is unique in its setting and shows how well hydrangeas can be used in both sun and shade, mixed with annuals, perennials, groundcovers and other shrubs.

Alice and Bob Smith's garden - Variety is the one word that describes the Smith garden on Shades Mountain. Not only are there nearly 20 different varieties of hydrangeas, but there are many other collections as well.

Numerous varieties of notable plants include clematis, tree peonies, evergreen and native analeas, camellias, crepe myrtles, Japanese maples, and viburnums, all scattered throughout the garden with the hydrangeas.

In addition, one will notice perennials such as hostas, ferns, heucheras, epimediums, and Bear's Britches in shade areas. And for the sun enthusiast, there are beds with roses, dahlias, lantana and many exquisite lilies.

Sympathy is extended to Gerlinda (Reisig) Talbot and family in the death of her father Dr. Gerhard H.R. Reisig. He passed away Wednesday in Moorehead, Minnesota. The funeral will be Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Huntsville at 3 p.m. with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Died March 9, 2005 Dr. Gerhard H.R. Reisig passed away Wednesday at the home of his daughter in Moorhead, Minn. Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1910, Dr. Reisig attended the Nikolaischule there through high school. He received his engineering degree from the Technical University in Dresden, Germany, and later earned his doctorate in engineering from the University of Braunschweig, Germany. After working for the Siemens Co. in Berlin for several years, he joined the Wernher von Braun rocket team in Peenemuende, Germany. In 1946, he moved with the team to El Paso, Texas, and in 1951, to Huntsville. He remained with the team until his retirement, working early on at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and later, at Marshall Space Flight Center. Soon after retirement, he taught for a year at Concordia College in Moorhead, as a visiting professor of physics. He continued working on various projects and authored a comprehensive history of rocket technology. Until the last several years, he regularly participated in space-related meetings and gave lectures. Thus, he maintained contact with scientists in many countries and found joy and fulfillment in encouraging young scientists. Dr. Reisig was an avid musician from his school days. He played the violin and viola and participated in school and university orchestras. In Huntsville, he played in chamber music groups and developed many close friendships along the way. With Mr. Alvin Dreger, he founded the Huntsville Chamber Music Guild. Dr. Reisig married Gisela Haenichen in 1937. Their shared love of music provided a deep bond and lifelong enjoyment. Mrs. Reisig preceded him in death. The Reisig's are survived by two daughters, Ms. Gerlinda Talbot of Huntsville, and Dr. Godela Iverson and her husband, Dr. Stanley, of Moorhead; three grandchildren, Jamie Talbot and his wife, Dawn, of Cairo, Ga., Andrea Greiff and her husband, Eric, of Moorhead, and Margaret Iverson of Washington, D.C.; and one great-grandchild, Caroline Talbot. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Huntsville. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Space and Rocket Center.

Robert W. Forgey, 67, of Huntsville died Wednesday. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He grew up in Mississippi and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University. He retired as chief of the prototype engineering lab of the Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. He also retired as a Lt. Col. from the 20th Special Forces Group of the Alabama National Guard. Bob was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the faith Sunday school class. He had a strong interest in missions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Edna Forgey, and a son, Robert W. Forgey Jr. Survivors include his wife, Anne W. Forgey; daughters, Dawn A. Lozano and her husband, Roger, of Snellville, Ga., Erynn M. Showers and her husband, David, and Alyson I. Forgey, all of Huntsville; sons, Carter A. Forgey and wife, Michelle, of Huntsville, and Christopher S. Forgey of Houston; honorary daughters, Iryna Haddock and her husband, Jeremy, of Madison, Natasha Yanislauskaia and Katya Yerofeeya of Belarus; grandchildren, Britney Lozano, Bradley Lozano, Brandon Showers and Kaisey Showers; brothers, Ben Forgey and his wife, Jean, William Forgey and his wife, Lynn, of Brandon, Miss.; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. today in the Wesley Worship Center at First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Don Cross, the Rev. Coy Hallmark and the Rev. Mike Edmundson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Forgey family requests that donation be made to the Bob Forgey Jr. Scholarship Fund or The UMCOR South Asia Emergency Fund at First United Methodist Church.

Sympathy is extended to Elizabeth(Neal) Wigley and her family in the loss of her brother: Joanna, Just a note to let you know my family lost our youngest brother, Ralph Harris age 48 to a heart attack on Nov 23 [2004]. The memorial service was Friday here in Ozark where he also lived. He had four children the youngest daughter is a senior in high school this year and his son is 10th grade. The oldest two daughters live in Jacksonville Al and attend Jacksonville University.

It was nice to visit with Hella and she was very surprised to see her classmates. She had been sole caregiver for her very sick Mother for past couple of years. She and family are staying at the Hilton (downtown Huntsville) if you would like to try and get in touch with her

John Richard Cochran, age 74, of Huntsville died Saturday [October 9th 2004]. He is survived by his wife Ginger G. Cochran; his sister, Doris Bridges; six daughters and one son; 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

A celebration of John's life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday (October 12th) at 1 p.m. Interment will be held at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association or the Grace Lutheran Church building fund.

W. Diane Allen Weston of Madison, founder and CEO of Uwohali, Inc., died Friday [Sept. 28, 2001].

Ms. Weston was a native of Huntsville and a graduate of the Florida Research Institute. She was co-founder of both the Women's Economic Development Council and The Village. She was a charter member of the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club and a member of the Chamber of Commerce Women's Business Council, Burritt Museum board of directors and the Biztech board of directors. She was past president of Girls, Inc., former director of the Board of Family Services Center, and founder of the Dallas-Lincoln Revitalization Project.

Ms. Weston helped organize the Americans of Indian Descent and started an Indian Educational Culture Program in Huntsville and Madison County schools.

She was the first woman in modern times to serve as the clan chief of the Echota Cherokee Deer Clan.

Her awards included Small Woman-Owned Business Contractor of the Year, Outstanding Woman of the Year, Outstanding Minority Entrepreneur of the Year Region IV and the Crystal Crown Award, and she was twice nominated for Avon's Women of Enterprise Award. She received special appointments to NASA's Advisory Committee for the International Space Station, the Defense Agency Committee on Women in the Services, the Governor's Committee on Science and Mathematics and the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference.

Survivors include one son, Jim Weston of Huntsville; one daughter, Suzanne Weston of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Tina J. Johnson of Huntsville; one brother, Don Allen of Melbourne, Fla.; two step-brothers, Lon Guest of Arab and Mitchell Hodges of Guntersville; and three grandchildren.

Laughlin Service Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

News!  Classmate causes disturbance in Cathedral!

Her report:

The Cathedral (appropriately named Notre Dame de Strasbourg and described by Victor Hugo as a "giant and delicate marvel") was started in 1176 and finished in 1439. It is totally magnificent, almost beyond description, and contains brightly colored, gigantic Rose windows and other huge windows of golden tones. Its height was the highest building in Christendom until it was overtaken by the towers in Ulm and Cologne, and is totally impacted by the City. It contains beautiful art masterpieces and the largest, most fantastic astronomical clock with animated figures that you will ever be able to get as close to as you can get to the one here.

While we were waiting in the little nook for the clock to do its "thing", I decided I was going to die of thirst at any second, so pulled a bottle of water out of my bag and cracked it open. I suppose "Cracked" would be an appropriate word to use here; when I twisted the cap it went off and sounded like a bomb had exploded, reverberated throughout the entire cathedral and had people headed for the exits and toward me to see what was going on. Needless to say I was totally soaked, the floor (which was luckily great slabs of rough stone) and the wall behind me were as totally soaked - and it was just a LITTLE bottle of water. It was one of CLINT'S bottles of mineral water with gas, the day was a bit warm and the water had heated itself up in that bag. I guess I am lucky it did not explode inside the bag when we were walking down the sidewalk - that probably would have injured me in places that would not be so terrific. Anyway, I got refreshed inside and out, pretended nothing had happened and continued our walk-about after watching the clock.

May 26, 2001, Classmates join for a special outing at the wonderful farm of Jo Anna and Buddy.

In the cool afternoon, we shared memories, food and Jo Anna's peach tea. 

If you couldn't be with us, we wished you could have heard Jeri Lynn and Sally recite a poem they learned in an HHS English class.  What great memories they have!  

Then there was this delicious peach tea. We all know Buddy's  secret

Jo Anna lead us on a hike of the territory, deep into the woods to view the flora and fauna.  She said deer and coyote are often seen there. During our hike, some joked can't you see this on TV:   "HHS classmates missing -  thought to be within sixteen miles of the school or walking distance of the south Parkway Wal-Mart - film at 10!"  We all made it back to the picnic site safe and sound but in need of a little rest.

After sun-down, under a clear, star filled sky in north Alabama, we roasted marshmallows around a bonfire.  Jo Anna provided the makings for the graham crackers and chocolate "smoors"- delectable treat.

This is Buddy, Jo Anna's husband next to the chimney at the site of the picnic. He has the secret peach tea recipe!  Does he look like he'll tell it?  I don't think so. 

The chimney, circa 1800's is all that remains of a log cabin that once was on the farm. They plan to take it down - they're afraid it may fall. [Web workeer's note: Here's an idea - put up a small fence around it, for safety sake - and leave it standing - see how long it can remain.  Maybe Huntsville Historic Society would like to recognize it!  I think it's a great landmark.]

Dan E. Williams, 59, of Huntsville died Friday [2/16/2001] at a local hospital. The graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery with Charles Marshall officiating.

Mr. Williams was a deacon at Randolph Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristy Williams Holbrook of Huntsville; a son, Sean Williams of Birmingham; a brother, Oliver Beirne Williams Jr. of Huntsville; three grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth Williams of Birmingham, Austin Riley Holbrook and Aaron Taylor Holbrook both of Huntsville.

Georgette Kendrick "Miss Georgette" Graham, 102, of Huntsville died Thursday in Millington, Tenn. Spry Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Ms. Graham graduated from Cox College in Atlanta with a bachelor's degree in music and from Peabody College in Nashville. She taught at Lincoln, Lee Junior High, Rison and Chapman schools as well as in a private studio. She was pianist and organist at several churches including Central Presbyterian Church for many years and performed for civic clubs and nursing homes. Ms. Graham was a member of Central Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one great-nephew, Ronald L. Gammon of Millington; and several other great-nephews and great-nieces.

Visitation will be Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Hawthorne Conservatory at Central Presbyterian Church.

Bill Easterling, [HHS Class 1958] whose columns have drawn readers to this page of The Times since 1979, died Friday at his home, ending a fight with cancer he had shared in powerful and poignant words for 15 months.

He was 60 years old.

His funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Mt. Zion Road in Monrovia.

Visitation will precede it from 10 a.m. until noon at Laughlin-Service Funeral Home in Huntsville.

Frances Cabaniss Roberts, 83, of Huntsville died Sunday [Nov. 5, 2000] at her home. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Episcopal Church of the Nativity with the Rev. Roderic L. Murray and the Rev. A. Emile Joffrion officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge. Dr. Roberts was a professor emerita at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and authority on the history of Huntsville, Madison County and the Tennessee Valley. She served on the boards of the Huntsville-Madison County Historical Society, the Burritt Museum, Constitution Hall Village, the Weeden House Museum, the Twickenham Historic District and the Huntsville Historic Commission. She was a published author and served as editor of The Huntsville Historical Review. Survivors include one nephew, Richard Bailey of Gordo; and two great nieces. Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Frances Roberts Scholarship Fund at UAH.

Big Bar-B-Que Bash at Bubba's!

Thanks to special arrangements made by Margaret Ann Goldsmith, class members met at the popular downtown Huntsville restaurant, Bubba's, for a relaxed evening of dining, visiting and Huntsville reminiscing.  What a great fall outing!  

More outings are planned. Jo Anna suggested it might be fun to attend a Huntsville High football game as a group next season.

Did you know Margaret Ann Goldsmith will be honored at a special dedication ceremony of Goldsmith-Schiffman Field (former home of the Crimson Panthers) on Friday October 27th? Do you know why?

Some brought a guest (husband, wife, sister, granddaughter). We had several guests (Diane Weston's granddaughter, Buddy Burkett, Bobby McAllister, Gene King, Marguerite Koontz, John White and Cora White's sister)  A wonderful time was had by all.

One of the deepest discussions at our table - how we forget what we are going for when we get to the next room we thought we had left it there of whatever we were looking to find!

Another get-together is being planned for a night in October. Will let you know the details soon as the arranger has arranged. Those who could not be here - we missed you and our thoughts are with you also.   - Jo Anna

Willliam Thompson Sloan, 81, died Wednesday, June 14th, 2000,  at his home. The graveside service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating.  Laughlin Service Funeral Home is in charge of burial.

Mr. Sloan was a World War II Army veteran having served five years with the 151st Engineer Band, 414th Army Service Band and the 279th Signal Battalion in Fort Hood, Texas. He was a graduate of Murray State University and the University of Louisville. Mr. Sloan taught band at Huntsville High School and served as both vice president and president of the Alabama Bandmasters Association. He was selected as Distinguished Band Director of America and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Troy. He was a member of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Beta Mu fraternities and First Baptist Church of Huntsville.

Survivors include his wife, Harriette Weaver Sloan; three daughters, Carolyn Able of Knoxville, Camille Velvet of Madison and Rebecca Valentine of Huntsville; four sons, Jim Sloan and Mike Sloan, both of Madison, and Chuck Sloan and Pat Sloan, both of Huntsville; one sister, Mary Weaver of Huntsville; and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jerry M. Bingham

HAZEL GREEN - Jerry M. Bingham, 59, died June 2nd, 2000. at his home. The funeral was at Spry Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Bingham was a lifelong Madison County resident. Survivors include his wife, Sandra G. Bingham of Hazel Green; one son, Lewis Allen Bingham of Hazel Green; one daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Bingham of Florence; his father, Hershel Bingham of Huntsville; and one brother, Don Bingham of Conway, Ark.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Robin Lanier Fund, 201 Sivley Road Suite 200, Huntsville 35810.
