Name origin: An abbreviation of Nicholas, common among the Dutch. Coal was an early king of Britain; gave his name to Colchester. Justice Cole lived in the reign of King Alfred.

    2. William Cole b.abt. 1627 apparently never married. In 1668 and 1670 was in Saco. In his old age he came back to Wells to the house of Jane (Cole) Littlefield, who bound herself to keep her uncle off the town, on which obligation the town in 1700 sued her 2nd husband, Capt. John Heard. Possibly it was this William Cole that was killed by the Indians in Wells 18 Sept.1712. Ref: Gen. Dictionary of Maine and NH.

    NOTE: [Is this our William???-HW] From The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire by POPE, page 42-43: COLE, William, carpenter, Boston; had an allotment of 2 acres Feb. 20, 1637, at MT Wooaston. Removed to Exeter, signed the combination 5 (4) 1639. Rem. to Hampton; proprieter in 1640. Sold land 17 Oct. 1656.

    His wife Eunice was accused in 1656 of witchcraft; tried, convicted, sentenced to receive corporal punishment be imprisoned for life. She petitioned in 1662 to be set at liberty after suffering so much punishment, chiefly pleading the needs of her husband "88" years of age, and the ruin of their small property which she had helped to collect during 20 years. [Mass. Arch.10,281.] Her petition was granted on condition of her departing from the jurisdiction; but she could not avail herself of the decision because she could not pay arrears or give bonds, and she remained in prison several years longer.

    He d. 26 (3)1662, "aged 81 years". Will dated 26 May 1662, probated 14 (2)1663, beq. to wife Unice her clothing which was left with him; all the rest of his "free" estate he gave to Thomas Webster on condition of his keeping him comfortably during his life.
    A deed was present in court, dated 7 Nov. 1656, conveying all his estate to his wife Eunice. The court ordered the selectmen of Hampton to take charge of the property, pay debts, and take care of the widow.

    Nicholas r. in Wells, ME in 1652. He lived on his father's farm in 1658. He had a grant in 1664 at Cape Porpoise (Mousam) River, ferry privilege for 7 years. By 1666 he was a partner with John Purington making oars and fishing. They removed to Harpswell in 1672 where they obtained from the Indians on Nov. 26, 1672 a deed covering that town. When the inhabitants fled in King Philip's War, Nicholas Cole bought many of them away. Probate on March 13, 1688/9, Wells, ME. Administration granted to his son Nicholas Jr.

    From The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire 1623-1660 by POPE page 42: COLE, COALE, COOLE Nicholas, Senior, Wells, took oath of allegiance to Mass. govt. 5 July 1653. He deposed 23 Dec. 1678, ae. about 52 years. [York Deeds III.] Sold a tract of land 25 June, 1669, reserving a "burying place for his generation." His son Nicholas sold a tract 17 Feb 1700, which had been originally laid out to his father.

    Thomas Cole had grants from 1684-1693 in Kennebuck, ME. Will probated on July 7, 1696. Administration was granted to Nicholas Cole and Josiah Littlefield. The latter in 1702 had two of Thomas's children baptized as his adopted children. Both Thomas and his wife were killed by indians
