Rex Smith

I first discovered Rex when my parents gave me tickets to see Sunset Blvd. in Toronto. I decided I wanted the Canadian Cast Recording so I could be familiar with the performances I was going to see (as well, at this point I only had the London cast, and I knew that the show had changed quite a lot since then). Rex had me from the first note. Then when I went to see the show he really impressed me with his acting and his stage presence. He’s one of those actors you just can’t keep your eyes off when he’s on stage. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s not hard to look at, either. :-)

Rex is currently starring as Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel in New York, having replaced another of my all-time favourites, Terrence Mann. I got to see the production in February, as part of the now infamous NYC trip, and Rex was, as expected, wonderful. We also got to meet him after the show, and he was absolutely as gracious and friendly as we could have hoped. I had heard some stories about his ... shall we say "unfriendliness"? ... at the stage door, but he was happy to talk and sign things for us and pose for pictures, so I was as happy as can be. The Scarlet Pimpernel closes May 30th, and I'm not sure what Rex's plans are after that, but with any luck we'll see him back on Broadway (or in Toronto - even better! :-) soon. *Update* Feb. '01 - Rex was on tour with Annie Get Your Gun and has recently been announced as the new star for the tour of Kiss Me, Kate with Rachel York. I'm really hoping this tour comes up to this neck of the woods!!!
