Adult Religious Education
What Do You Want to Hear?
The Hammond Unitarian Church (HUC) Religious Education (RE) program is always
seeking out new ideas for programs. If there is a topic that you would
like to hear about then please let us know. The following is a sample
of some of the programs that have been available to membership & friends
of our church.
New UU Adult RE Series at HUC
This four part program, available to both members & friends of HUC, combines
the exploration of personal feelings about religion with a look at the development
of Unitarian Universalism. A study of the operations and goals of the
HUC is also included. The program is based on the UUA's New UU resources,
and includes some of our own modifications to add focus on our church.
Please be sure to let someone know that you have an interest in participating
with this open program. Our New UU program is offered on a periodic
basis when enough folks express interest to organize a class.
The four sessions (that run for less than 2hrs each) are:
- Sharing Personal Odysseys and the Origin of the Free Church
Participants share their own spiritual path that lead them to where they
are now. This is followed by a presentation & discussion of some
of the historical forces that led Christianity away from free religion.
- Learning About Unitarian-Universalism: History, Tradition, and Beliefs
This segment is typically led by a visiting UU minister. The presentation
is on the historical basis of the New Testament, the development of Unitarianism
and Universalism in Europe and North America, and other topics. The
discussions by participants that follow the presentation are usually very
stimulating.
- Writing the history of our church. Where are we and where are we going?
A presentation of HUC goals is followed by a discussion. The focus
is on activities within the church, and service to the community.
- Exploring Religious Issues and Conflicts
A discussion that considers the diversity of opinion among ourselves about
how our church should be run. Then, based on what has been learned,
the idea of what we believe as Unitarian-Universalists is explored.
The session is concluded by discussing our personal feelings on current local,
national, & world issues, and how they relate to opinions expressed by
Unitarian-Universalist ministers and the Board of Directors of the UUA.
On The Bible
Led by Dick Kozelka
Dick Kozelka, a retired minister, leads an Adult Religious Education series
based on the New Testament. This three part series includes discussions
on topics like: each participant's exposure to and knowledge of the Bible;
reading assignments such as "The Gospel of Mark"; a liberal approach to the
Bible as a library of books about human religious experience, etc.
Dick's focus is on non-King James versions of the Bible and suggests everyone
get a copy of either "Good News For Modern Man" Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan
$6.95, or "Revised Standard Version" (3 vol.) New York: Nelson, 1946, or
"New Revised Standard Version" (1 vol.) New York: Oxford, approx. $28.00.
Anyone may participate in these series and newcomers are encouraged to attend.
This is a rare opportunity to learn and understand the basis of Christianity
from a well-educated Biblical scholar. If you have an interest in this
series please let us know. A new series may be scheduled anytime enough
interest is expressed.
