Established in 1918, Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, is the third oldest university in South India and the eighth oldest in the entire country. Its territorial jurisdiction extends to six districts of Andhra Pradesh, including the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and it fulfills the higher education aspirations of about 20 million people in the region of Telangana (Andhra Pradesh). Osmania University is a multi-campus (8 campus colleges, 5 constituent colleges and 8 district PG colleges), multi-faculty (11 faculties), and affiliating University with 921 colleges.

When Osmania University was established during 1918-1919 year, Physics was one of the first few science subjects that were introduced. In the last six decades the Department has grown enormously in strength and diversity and it has emerged as one of the centres of Excellence in Physics in the Country.  The research activity taken up by the Department on several aspects of crystal characterisation, superconductivity, spectroscopy high energy physics and X-ray diffraction earned national and international recognition.  The Department has published over 1700 research papers in seventy different national and international journals, having high impact index which led to the award of more than 260 Ph.D.’s from the Department.
